  • What job in health care would suit me?

I am currently trying to decide which career to pursue and hoped for the opinion of others.

I am 21 and currently work in the corporate world and have become bored with my job. I want to do something where I can go home at night feeling like I made a difference.

I have thought over many jobs but just can't figure out which one of any medical job would suit me best. I am more than willing to attend university. I am a very analytical person, good problem solver and love to learn new things (within my abilities).

    I have considered the following:

Genetic Counselor - Sounds great and I love biology however I am not sure if I could cope with Uni science and jobs are few and far between at the moment. Also when it becomes between me and a genetics genius - who would get the role?

Occupational Therapist - Sounds like a meaningful job however there is a lot of overlap between OT and Physio and alot of people question the use of having both jobs in the same place. Also I do not wish to do incontinence training etc and although there is more to OT than that - it appears old age care is where most of the jobs will be over the years to come.

Physio - Also sounds good however I have scoliosis in my back and see a physio for it. I may not be able to do a lot of the manual lifting expected of a physio. I believe I may also become bored of doing the same exercises over and over again for similar injuries.

Psychology - It is a lot of university and with the use of counselors who are paid less - psychology isn't always required and may not grow as a profession as rapidly as other careers. Additionally I may find it hard to counsel disabled people or mentally ill people who are unable to show a large amount of progress.

Counselor - I believe it would be a good job for me however the amount of years of school you do, they are significantly under paid and leaving full time work to study would mean debts I would struggle to pay off in a profession that doesn't pay anymore than my current job. It may lead me to resent the job.

Nurse - I like the idea, however it's a job you love or hate and I am afraid I may be one who hates it as I prefer to stay clear of high pressure on the spot stress. I have it in my current job and the on the spot stress is something I hate most.

Therapeutic Radiography - I have considered this and sonography etc however there doesn't seem to be a lot of job opportunities at the moment and feel there may be more students than jobs by the time I graduate.

Does anyone have an opinion on the ones listed above or any others I could consider. I have looked at others but these are the main ones I have researched.

Thank you all for your time and opinions!

It shines a whole other light on a career I was considering!

  • Can I become an occupational therapist with a bad back?

    Hi,

I was hoping to go to Uni next year to study to become an occupational therapist however I have heard there is a lot of heavy lifting involved and I have scoliosis (curved spine). It does hurt sometimes and I have to be careful and try not to lift heavy objects.

Do you think it would be appropriate to become an OT?

  • Occupational Therapy in Australia?

Can I ask on average, how much does an occupational therapist in NSW earn? If possible can I get an approx for a graduate, 2 yrs, 5 yrs, 8 yrs etc.

I am trying to work out whether I can afford to go to Uni. I will go into a bit of debt studying and need to work out if I can pay back it back in a reasonable time frame.

I am 21, and will have all the usual rent, bills etc to pay. I am concerned as much as I want to do it, it won't be worth being miserable because of my debt.

  • What to do as a career?

I am trying to find a career that suits me and would like the opinion of others.

I am 21 and currently work full time in corporate event management but no longer find enjoyment in my job.

I would like to find a career that I view as worthwhile. What makes it difficult is that I don't really have any specific interests or hobbies.

I am naturally intuitive, problem solver and analytical thinker. I love to learn and study, I have good customer service skills. I would like to get out from behind a desk but wouldn't mind administrative tasks in my job. My current job can be stressful and needs me to multitask which i believe i can do effectively however i do not enjoy a constantly "high stress" environment.

I identified two industries I have a natural draw towards as health/medicine and nature/ecology. I think I would be perfect in a medical field, however I don't believe I have the intelligence to go through medical school or specialise in a medical area outside medicine. I had thought of becoming a genetic counselor but after further investigation, have doubts I could grasps genetics enough to have a successful career which I was disapointed about.

I am now considering nursing (paediatric in particular), however I am unsure as to whether I would enjoy this environment and the long hours.

I know there is no magical answer but others opinion would help me immensely! I have been on every "how to find your perfect career" website and have still come to no conclusion. I don't mind doing further study if necessary.

  • My ability to become a Genetic Counselor?

I am 21 and looking to change to a more rewarding career.

I don't have a background in Science and only took Biology in High School which I passed but was not near the top of my class. I also attempted Advanced maths but failed, but perhaps it would be different outside a high school setting.

I really like the sounds of being a genetic counselor, I was originally looking at Psychology but this seems much more interesting.

My concern is my ability to go to university and study Science. Is there anyway of assessing my ability to keep on top of the subjects?

Also how in depth will the masters in genetic counseling be?

I believe it will be a highly rewarding career, should I be able to meet the criteria of the masters program.

  • Do you think a degree is "required" to suceed in the business world today?

I have been working since I left school but now at 22 I am thinking of going to university. Do you think it would be worth going to get a formal degree or should I continue to work and hope not having a degree won't effect me in the future?

Would be good to hear from those who went to Uni later rather than from high school and whether people think it is worth getting a degree for whatever the future may hold or whether at this stage I should just continue to work and gain experience. Ultimately at this stage is it worth giving up most of my wage, going in to debt and putting my work life on hold to obtain a degree?

    My options are:

    1. Continue to work

    2. Go to University (Full time)

    3. Go to University (Part time) for 6 years and continue to work - I'm not sure I can wait 6 years to graduate!?

I would like your opinion, as this is a difficult decision for me to make.

  • Double degree at University of Western Sydney?

I'm thinking of doing the following degree at UWS in Australia in 2010: Bachelor of Science / Bachelor of Business and Commerce

It's a new double degree and wanted to know of others experiences doing either of these courses at the university or having done/doing a double degree and what the courses and work load are like?

Also do you still have to pay for the course individually or do you just pay one lot of fees each year (for 4 years) or do you pay 2 lots of 3 year degree fees. It's hard to find this information on the website.

    Thank you!

  • Docs are running out of ideas - Can anyone help?

I get bad stomach cramps (Especially after eating) and i feel like i have a tennis ball wedged underneath my left rib. I am also getting weak and light headed. I have been rushed in to the docs before with cramps so bad they had to inject me with buscapan to calm me down so i function again, it was horrible and i really want this figured out before i have a really bad attack again!

Docs have tested my gall bladder, my pancreas etc etc and can't find whats wrong. I had a CT scan today which again showed nothing, even though they thought i had pancreatitis because my blood tests pointed to that.

I am back at the doctors tomorrow, but does anyone have any suggestions or had a diagnosis with similar symptons?

    Appreciate your answers.

  • Scoliosis?

I have been diagnosed with a S curved spine 20 degrees. I have started physiotherapy to manipulate the spine and the muscles and will be starting a gym course soon to strengthen my back muscles. He says it will be fine, but it will just take time to fix.

I'm worried however because i have read others people's stories and most of them just continue to get worse until they need an operation and rods put in their back. The option of a brace hasn't even been discussed between myself, my doctor and my physiotherapist and wondered whether they are just trying to keep me optimistic or not?

Can i have someone's opinion please?

  • Do i fit into a specific religion? Am i Pagan?

I do not have the same beliefs as any of the main religions and although i do not feel i have to adhere to the rules of a religion it would be nice to find a religion with similar beliefs to mine. Most friends are very christian and dont understand.

I belive in one higher being (Though not necessarily called god). I believe in Karma and that everything happens for a reason. I do not pray however i do sometimes feel myself asking out loud. I believe there may be spirits however, i am not sure what they are - i just get that 'feeling' sometimes. I do not follow readings and horoscopes religiously but do sometimes look at them for some kind of guidance.I don't however believe in witchcraft as such.

I suppose i know i am spiritual, and perhaps my beliefs do not fit a specific religion. However i would like to think there are others who believe the same and perhaps i may learn something. Not something which i must follow, but perhaps a different way of looking at things. Can anyone help?
