  • Why does injury cause brief unconsciousness?

I suppose I'm thinking specifically about head injuries, though this question applies to any injury that causes unconsciousness for, say, a few minutes. If you would revive so soon, why would you fall unconscious in the first place? What exactly is happening physiologically during brief unconsciousness? Is it a sort of healing process? Once you're unconscious, what causes revival? Also, is such unconsciousness on the same spectrum as coma, physiologically, or do they have different causes and/or mechanisms?

  • Are my cats fighting or playing?

My two cats seem to be settling in well after they moved in with me a month ago. I've been in contact with the previous owners and they said the cats were getting along alright when they had them. I have no other cats.

Malachi, a larger male, seems to be bullying Isabel, a smaller female. It started in the form of play fighting, where there seemed to be an even playing field, but more and more Malachi is dominating Isabel in a way that seems to make her very uncomfortable. The first time I broke it up because Isabel hissed at Malachi. The last two times there was no hissing, but Isabel wasn't fighting back despite being clearly unnerved. With her ears back she tried to push Malachi off of her, but he wouldn't release her. He just held her down and kept biting her in various places (although no blood was shed). The last time she did try to get away but Malachi just jumped on her again.

Could I be misinterpreting this behavior? If not, what do I do about it?

  • How to reconcile the ideal gas law with the effects of a moving piston?

If a piston containing an ideal gas compresses, the volume decreases, which means that the pressure must increase if the temperature remains constant. Fine.

We know from observations, however, that some of that work is converted to heat, thereby increasing the temperature of the system. (Does the entropy increase too? I'm not sure since the volume decreases.) So the product PV increases *despite* the decrease in V. What's going on here? This situation seems to turn the ideal gas law on its head.

  • 35 year old at a goth club: too old?

I've been thinking I'd like to start checking out goth clubs. I know that I should just go if I feel like it, but I want to make sure ahead of time that I'm not going to stick out *too* much. If a 35 year old, average looking dude goes to a goth club alone and just hangs out at the bar, will that seem weird? Will it be alright if he's dressed appropriately? Is it even possible for a 35 year old to dress appropriately for a goth club? This is in the L.A. area if that makes a difference.

2 Timothy 3:16 begins with this quote. I'm curious, what exactly does "all scripture" mean, and how do we know?

  • Are my lyrics too... much?

I'm giving a shot at writing some lyrics. I don't know if they're too... heavy? They seem like they might be too... much. Too much what, I don't know. It seems like there's something wrong with them but I can't pinpoint it. Here they are:

Carry me where I can find you

Then leave me in the sea

You lie while explaining why you lie

    Finally I shed a marker

    Of how I always felt

    A felony I justify

What a witty way to tell me

    You can't uphold the rules

You navigate the crickets and the boys

    In familiar surroundings

    And ordinary things

I merge with splendor and the void

Frames forming expanding around my mind tonight

    (Chorus)

    We thought it was impossible

    But Heaven fell

    We thought it couldn't happen

    To us

    Gold is in your eyes

    No more perfect skies

    No more perfect sighs

    For us

Now we farm a troubled acre

    And wonder where we stand

The earth is clay and caramel

    Bellicosity or umbrage

    It doesn't matter which

Blood is seeping where your ruby fell

Tell me all of your secrets or we will die tonight

    (Chorus)

    (Instrumental)

    (Chorus to end)

  • Borrow and spend: Why wait until now to complain?

I didn't hear much from Republicans while the Bush administration ran this country from a surplus into the deepest debt it's ever seen. What's wrong with continuing this fiscal policy? Does the U.S. have any less monetary need than it had before?

I'm *not* saying Republicans are stupid, but this does look like silly partisanship to me. Maybe someone can enlighten me?

  • Multi-day parking at LAX?

I'm planning a trip on the 22nd. Shuttle to/from my apartment is going to be $100, so I think maybe I should just drive and pay for parking. How likely am I to have trouble finding a parking spot?

  • How do we justify allowing children to grow to maturity?

God is kind and loving, so I think we can assume He doesn't damn children who die while too young to understand the tenets of the Abrahamic faiths. Therefore, we do them a disservice by allowing them to live long enough to risk damnation; the only certain way to save our children from damnation is to kill them young. Yes, it sounds harsh, but between certain salvation and a lifetime on Earth with a chance of damnation, the former is clearly the better choice by far, and we must do whatever is necessary for our children's best interests, no matter how dirty our hands get. So I ask again, how do we justify allowing children to grow to maturity?

  • I did something stupid regarding my taxes. What do I do now?

I have put off sending in my tax forms since April, both the federal and state (California). After such a ridiculously long delay, do I need to do anything special before I submit them now, or can I just complete the forms and send them in? I expect refunds from both the state and the IRS, in case that would affect your answer.

The electromagnetic, strong, and gravitational forces affect particle momentum. Do weak force interactions do this? If not, why is the weak force different?

There was a Star Trek TNG episode where they find a room with some weird machinery in it, and when they activate the machinery, doorways to various distant locations open. Does anyone remember what else happened in that episode, or what the title was?

  • Yet another poem. What do you think?

    Her smile is reckless

Her sex is a fitful sun

Her hair is a war of color

Her skin is affection as hue

  • After the Rain?

    Streets already drying

    And a last light

    Rallies from the west

    Through clouds capitulating

Trees and lines and water-stained walls

    Stand twilit

    Backlit by electrum

    And for now

    The brisk air has forgotten

    That the world is imperfect

  • What exactly is the criticism regarding the court's treatment of the Jena 6?

Aggravated battery does seem like an excessive charge. Is this why so many people are upset about how this case has been handled? If the charge were merely battery, would this still be a controversial case? Is this huge public outcry because of the difference between battery and aggravated battery?

  • Grounds in electronics?

When a schematic shows multiple grounds, do the grounds need to be electrically isolated from each other?

Also, I've seen implementations where the ground is really just wire connected to the chassis. Why does this work when leaving the wire unconnected doesn't work? Does it have something to do with capacitance?
