Ordinary World

This is usually plain and simple, but it can be complex...
Establishes for the reader, or viewer, who the hero is and what they do

Ordinary World
Hero in their everyday, ordinary, normal world.
This is usually plain and simple, but it can be complex...
Establishes for the reader, or viewer, who the hero is and what they do
But why an Ordinary World?
The "special world" that the story will take place in can only be viewed as special if it differs from the world the hero is accustomed.
The call to Adventure
Hero is presented with a problem, challenge, or adventure to undertake
Hero, once presented with the Call, can no longer remain indefinitely in the comfort of the Ordinary World
Establishes stakes of the game
Makes clear the hero's goal
Refusal of the Call (The Reluctant Hero)
All about fear
Hero "Balks at the threshold of adventure"
Fear/Terror of the unknown
change in circumstances, further offense against natural order of things, or encouragement if mentor...requirement(s) for getting past fear
Meeting with the Mentor (The Wise Old man or woman)
Prepares the hero to face the unknown
Give advice, guidance, or equipment
Mentor cannot face the challenge with the hero, the hero must face the adventure alone
Crossing the First Threshold
Hero commits to adventure, leaves comforts of Ordinary World and fully enters special world of the story
Agrees to face the consequences of dealing with the the problems/challenges posed in the Call to Adventure
The story takes off... Dorothy starts down the yellow- brick road, Happy Gilmore joins the tour
Tests, Allies, and Enemies
Hero encounters new tests, makes allies and enemies
Begins to learn rules of Special World
Identify Tests, allies, and enemies:
Wizard of Oz...?
Dark Knight...?
Happy Gilmore...?
Approach to the Inmost Cave
Comes to the place where object or quest is hidden
- The most dangerous spot in Special World
Often pause to plan, prepare, Outwit, etc.
Ordeal
In "the belly of the beast"
Darkest moment for the hero...will he live or die?
- Audience held in suspense
Important Note: hero must die/appear to die so he can be reborn (often a symbolic baptism is present
Reward (Seizing the sword)
Hero takes possession of the treasure he was seeking...could be anything
Hero may also reconcile a relationship with another character: mother, father, girlfriend, boyfriend, etc.
- usually brought by a change in the hero
The Road Back
Hero not yet in the clear...
Must face consequences of confronting the "dark forces or the Ordeal"
Hero is usually pursued by vengeful forces
Decision to return to Ordinary World- Special World must be left behind
Resurrection
A second- life- and- death moment
Able to return to the Ordinary World after being transformed as a new being with new insights
Return with the Elixir
Hero returns to Ordinary World with some treasure, insight, lesson, etc. taken from the special world... Treasure can be concrete or abstract
