  • Christians: what is your position on figs?

    Sinful? Would you eat them?

  • Atheists: Is there anything that could make you believe in God?

Personally, I would always think the more logical option would be: "I guess my brain is misfiring" if I ever had a spiritual experience, and I can't think of any 'evidence' that would make me switch sides.

But is there anything that you can think of that might make you reconsider your stance?

  • Thunderbird creates a duplicate account when I try to add a different email address?

Ok, so I have two email addresses: appleapple@old.com and appleapple@new.com. Those aren't their real names, obviously. Both addresses have the same incoming mail server, because both are hosted by the same company. They also have the same outgoing server.

Now my problem: I tried to add the new @new.com address (it's new, as the name suggests, I've been happily using the @old.com account for a while now) by going to account settings > account actions > add account.

But it overwrote my old one, so I have two identical accounts, both of which are for the @new.com email address. When I tried to alter one back to the old address, it changed both. What am I doing wrong?

TL/DR: Thunderbird keeps creating duplicate accounts, I cannot create two separate accounts - possibly because they share an incoming mail server?

    Any advice is hugely appreciated!

  • Cadbury cakes..I want some..?

I liked them and now they don't exist. What's up with that? Where have they gone and how can I make cakes that taste just like them?

  • Gift for my law-student mum..?

So my mum just got into law, and I'd love to give her something law-related as a Christmas present. Any ideas? I can't afford anything too expensive, but any ideas are hugely appreciated :)

  • Getting to know all those other dimensions....?

Do you think human beings will ever be capable of understanding spatial dimensions higher than the three we're already aware of?

More than just hypothesising about them, I mean.

(By the way, I'm talking strictly spatial dimensions, not temporal dimensions or anything else)

And do you think there are other beings that exist in 4 dimensions already, invisible to us?

If you're not sure where I'm coming from, read Flatland by Edwin A. Abbott, it's pretty nifty.

  • For those who wonder what atheists have to lose from believing...?

Are you advocating faith based purely on fear? Surely making a pretense of believing just so they could get into heaven wouldn't fool god, so what exactly are you proposing?

Finally, is your own faith based on fear alone?

  • To those who think atheists know there's a god but pretend not to believe to look cool...?

Doesn't this mean you think those who believe in god are inherently uncool?

So, what is it about loving god that's so lame*?

*I don't think this. Apparently there are some self-hatin' theists out there who do, though.

  • To the theists who question the ethics of non-believers...?

Why do you think atheists generally behave ethically?

What is your explanation for altruistic behaviour by non-believers?

Do you think the only reason we don't steal, rape, and kill is because we'd probably get punished?

This isn't for all theists, only the ones who wonder where atheists get their morals from if not from god (while quietly making the assumption that we don't have any, or indirectly got them from god without admitting it).

  • Does anyone else think....?

That the teaching of creationism in schools may lead to some people wanting their dogs' beliefs to be taught in schools?

  • Who would burn in hell for longer...?

A bad Christian (or person of your religion) or a good atheist?

What about people of a religion that isn't yours? Where do they fit in on the scale of who gets punished the hardest in the afterlife? Does this depend on the religion, are people of some religions punished less than others?

  • What's the etymology of the phrase "...and how!"?

As would be used in the following way:

"Boy, that's a big carrot you got there, Bob"

    "..And how!"

I know it's used to add emphasis or express agreement, but how did it come about? I can't see any way where it would make any literal sense, and most phrases originally make some sense, right?

Bonus points*: Can the word etymology be applied to a phrase, or is it only applicable to single words? If it's only a word thing, what's the word when you're talking about the origins of phrases?

*I'll give you a thumbs up

  • Atheists: what makes you so sure there's no god?

And while I'm at it, why is evolution proof that god doesn't exist, as opposed to god not existing the way the bible says?

And finally: when are you going to get bored with answering every single question in the religion section with some variant of 'because god doesn't exist'? Unless you're trying to prove that atheists are completely lacking in creativity.

  • Is it offensive to muslims..?

..that I think muslims are cool in an exotic sort of way? I'm not sure why, but I find muslims fascinating. Is that a bad thing, like saying "all asians are good at maths" or something?
