  • Can I reprocess pickles if the only problem is underfilling?

I made 6 jars of pickled green beans but I didn't realize how much the buggers would shrink. Can I open them up, repack them so I have 3 or 4 jars, and reprocess? It's a waste of space for 6 half-filled jars. Will it ruin the texture? The recipe didn't call for them to be cooked first, if that helps.

  • Should I go by my middle name for my business?

I am starting a paralegal business next year and I am named after an obscure Star Trek character. Very few people have pronounced my name correctly on the first try, and I suspect that those who did were told by others in advance how to pronounce it. I constantly have to correct people on the pronunciation and I often have to do it multiple times, and nobody likes that. It's extremely hard for me not to get irritated by it, knowing that I have endured so much of it and I will have to endure it for the rest of my life. This usually isn't a problem with acquaintances, but I don't want to get on the bad side of my clients, adversaries, and various court and tribunal officials because of what they are supposed to call me.

My middle name, by contrast, is not a common name either, but it is familiar and I am not likely to run into this problem if I go by that name. On the other hand, I have never gone by my middle name before. I have never told people to call me my middle name, nor have I ever been in a situation where I have had to respond to it. Also, it might be confusing to have one name in the private aspect of my life and another in the professional aspect of my life, and might give others the impression that I have something to hide, thus giving them a reason to question my integrity.

Which is the better option here?

  • Is this a legal rent increase in Ontario?

I rented my house last year for $425/month. Half-way through the year, my landlord switched property managers due to money issues. My roommates moved out and I got new ones, and since the lease was combined, they wrote up a new one and I was charged a second rent deposit. They increased the rent to $445, which I recently discovered that this is $17 above what the guideline would allow and $4 above the maximum above guideline increase had they applied or even had a reason for it.

I have corresponded with their leasing manager about this. She insists that the fact that I signed the lease means that I agreed to relinquish my rights as a tenant and will not refund it or decrease the rent, but according too section 124 of the Residential Tenancies Act, the agreement is coerced and therefore void. I have it on record that she acknowledges that I am not a new tenant; I also have it on record that she is calling me a new tenant so that the rent increase can be legal because in that case, section 124 would not apply.

Is the signing of a new lease and payment of a second rent deposit a basis to charge a returning tenant over and above what the rent guideline will allow? I can't find anything that proves that it is or isn't. I intend to seek legal advice after the long weekend, but if someone can answer this question and provide a legal document that backs it up, I would appreciate it.

  • Why doesn't my wakame turn green?

I bought Eden brand dried wakame sheets a few days ago, and it seems that no matter what I do, it stays brown after I reconstitute and blanch it. I have looked up several methods of reconstituting and blanching - different temperature and time combinations, different amounts of salt - and it just stays brown. Has anyone else used this brand and found the same problem? It doesn't seem to affect the taste, but it doesn't look appetizing enough that I would ever serve it to a guest.

  • I have a very odd perfect pitch situation. How can I retrain my ear?

I have perfect pitch (not born with it - it developed over time), but there is a huge problem with it - I hear every note, and play/sing every note, flat. I will be going to university this fall (Wilfrid Laurier) for music on flute. Its music program is very competitive, and if I don't fix this problem soon, I might not be able to stay in the program. I know that I am capable of fixing it, but I don't know how to go about fixing it. What would be the best way to retrain my ear so that I hear everything in tune?

  • Sticky E Flat key - should I adjust the spring to let it dry?

I had my flute repaired in January and had to have all the pads on the foot joint, except for the low B, replaced. I am aware that it is common for them to be sticky after having been replaced, but the E Flat, since it is a closed key, continues to be sticky after all the others have stopped being sticky.

What I'm wondering is if it is okay to move the spring on the E Flat key to the other side to hold it open overnight so that the key can dry. Should I just do that, or should I prop it open some other way (tape, etc.)?

  • Does anyone have a MIDI file for Hindemith's Sonata for Flute and Piano?

I've exhausted all search engines looking for this and only found the first movement. I need the third and fourth because I am auditioning for university with them (as well as the Enescu Cantabile e Presto, which I found with success). If anyone has one, or knows of a place where I can find one, I would appreciate it very much.

  • What should I do about my severe nasal congestion?

My nose is so congested I cannot breathe in through it, and I can breathe out with great difficulty. It has been like that for the last three days, and since I have had to breathe through my mouth during that time I have developed strep throat due to the irritation. (Not entirely due to the irritation, but you know what I mean.) So far I have tried Otrivin - didn't overuse it, but it didn't work; acupuncture and reflexology (both courtesy of my mom); steam/heat; and when I used the neti pot, it didn't drain out the other side any more than a few drops (after having used it for a long time, although the neti pot always does that for me). When I blow my nose, either I have no mucous or I have what appears to be a lot of mucous but I'm still as congested as before. I will also make note that I have a lot of pressure in my ears at the moment.

Is there anything else I can do, aside from waiting for it to drain?

  • Error when answering a specific question

I've been trying to answer this person's question here

    http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Av...

and no matter what I do, I get an error message. It only happens with that question. This person does not allow emails. I've refreshed the browser, closed it and deleted all my cookies (which I HATE doing) and nothing has worked. I had a link in the answer and I removed it; the same thing happened. I can answer other questions without difficulty, just not that question.

Is there anything I can do or should I just give up on it?

  • What does it mean when a cat carries its tail on its back?

I have a Siamese-tortoise shell mix cat and she is quite a handful. She is a very curious cat and gets into everything. She is also very playful and not very affectionate, but still a nice cat. Sometimes she will walk with her tail on her back. My flute teacher has a black cat with the same attitude who also carries his tail on his back. A few years ago when we had our cat spayed, the vet pointed out that her tail was on her back and she said it like it meant something. I looked all over for tail signals and found nothing mentioning the tail on the back. Does anyone know what that means?

  • What do I make of this buzzing light?

There is a light fixture in the computer room that buzzes. No other light does that. Since it has started the bulb has been changed and it still buzzes. If I hit the light fixture the buzzing stops, but it always starts within a few minutes. Recently it has started buzzing in pulses. I'm not sure if it is a problem or not but it is irritating. What are the risks if there are any, and to what scale is the danger; and what is the best possible solution?

  • Could the earth's rotation power a viable generator?

If so, how could a generator powered by the rotation of the earth be created? Would it be sensitive to the movement of the plates?

One more thing - would it have 100% efficiency, or at least something very close to that?
