  • How do you calculate chance of getting the same shuffle of a deck of cards twice?

    So apparently the chances are 8 x 10 to the 67th. This is assuming it should be 52 x 51 x 50...etc.

    However, should it really be 52 x 52 x 52...etc?

I don t understand why one method or the other is correct.

  • Should I contact the other driver in an accident?

Last night I was in a car accident. I was driving on a winding country road when it made a sharp S turn. Right at the peak of the turn I see a stop sign very close ahead, but as soon as I hit the brakes I start skidding. I can't say for sure, but it felt like the distance from the turn and when you can see the stop sign is only enough room to fit 2 or 3 cars. I slid right down the road and into traffic and got T-boned.

Nobody was hurt, but there were 3 kids in the car. I felt really bad. One was a teen boy who looked wigged out, there were two younger girls who were crying. To tell the truth I almost cried too when I saw them. The mom said they were scared, but kept telling me they were alright. The son said so too. When the EMTs arrived I asked them to look at the kids, but the EMTs said they'd be alright. The officer said I was at fault, which was a given, but I wasn't getting a citation. It's all kind of ironic, I guess; I'm a volunteer Fireman in my off duty time back at the base I'm stationed at, and so I've been dealing with these situations for a while now. When the Firemen showed up it through me for a loop.

Normally, when the Fire Company deals with more serious situations, we follow up on the casualties to make sure they're okay. Sometimes they show up at our monthly meetings to tell everybody how they're doing. Now that I've caused the accident I don't know what to think about it.

So, long story short, I'm wondering if I should follow through with the other casualty. Her name and phone number is on the police report. I don't think I've ever heard of anybody doing this, but I'm thinking about calling her. Please, give me an honest answer. She was upset since she saw me in effect blow through the stop sign. She said it was her only car to get to work. I didn't get much chance to talk to her, only to apologize briefly and explain roughly what happened. Someone please give me some honest feedback- if you were in her position, would you want me to call you? I just want to make sure the kids are okay and apologize. Should I just leave them alone instead?

  • Shock someone with a coat hangar and a battery?

I'm currently engaged in an all-out prank war with a room mate.

I was thinking about taping a battery of some sort to the inside of one his shirts, and running a wire from the terminal to the metal coat hangar, in the hopes that it would shock him when he touches it.

I've done some research into it myself, and I've seen several complicated ways to shock somebody, but nobody has done this. Is it really that simple?

I'm also hoping wondering if it is dangerous. Could leaving the wire like this cause a fire? (I'm a Fireman, ironically)

If anybody would care to offer some advice, words of wisdom, or mercilessly make fun of my plans, I'd appreciate it.

  • A few books to read regarding Creationism and Evolution?

Personally, I've never thought much into the subject. Growing up I've had a few textbooks from both sides, and other then that, have never done much research into it. However, recently, my coworkers have begun talking about it, and I'm having a really hard time following the discussion.

Just yesterday for instance, the statement was made that the Evolution presented in textbooks was Darwinism, which had been left behind by the scientific community, at which point they split into "Punctuated Equilibrium" and "Neo-Darwinism", and I didn't understand how, but soon after, it begrudgingly became general consensus after that it made a strong case against the validity of Evolution.

Now, I really don't know what to think of it all. I've tried to do some research online, but it seems that most of the articles are either contradicting each other, or want me to believe everything they say without questioning it. "The overwhelming evidence of my theory...." "Only a retard would believe anything other then me...." "All my personal studies have shown without a doubt...."

Now I seem to be a minority, but as a personal rule, I don't believe ANYTHING with 100% certainty unless my personal experience can support it. I'm sick of how nearly everybody I know thinks that their textbook is irrefutable, and refuse to think for themselves. (For instance, I would like to SEE evidence of the "missing link" not read about how countless scientists say that there is allll this evidence for their theory, and then only give evidence of micro evolution, and expect me to believe that macro evolution is somehow also true) I'm tired of hearing people talk about what their research supposedly points to, rather then actually giving me good reasons to believe them. I don't doubt that there is a lot of good reasoning out there, and I have found a little, but I'm getting burnt out on biased opinions.

So, if anybody out there could, please recommend a few good books to get, from both sides, or even better a book that is neutral. (I doubt one actually exists) I'd like a few good books to help me understand the basics at first, but I'll gladly take recommendations for books to read later. I know a book can only go so far to convince someone like me, but I will give credit where it's due regarding a sound argument. I'd rather read a good book with a solid, informative, and convincing argument rather then a few dozen poorly written biased internet articles.

  • Should I run with a weighted vest?

I've been trying to increase my endurance by running with a backpack filled with random stuff, which all adds up to just over 25 lbs. I've started doing this after talking to people who were medically reclassed from Pararescue, and they kept talking about all the ruck running they'd do. (I can run about 9 miles with my backpack, no where NEAR the weight, distance, or time the PJs ran with on a regular basis) However, I am thinking that it's a great way to build endurance, and I have noticed a huge improvement in myself since I've started, so I'd like to keep going on this track.

However, let's be honest- my backpack is probably not the best way to go about this. I started looking online for weighted vests, or fake kevlar plates for my old airsoft plate carrier, and realized that I'm completely clueless as to what I'm doing. I'd like to be able to not have the backpack flying around behind me, and work something out that's better then throwing a bunch of random books in before I head out. (I can't seem to manage to fit more then 25lbs in there anyways)

So. I'd really appreciate some input with people who've had some experience doing this. What's the best thing to run with, and most cost effective way to do it? I was leaning towards trying to get fake plates for my old vest, but couldn't seem to find anything that would work, and wasn't actually real. (on a side note, any ideas as to something I could easily come up with that would fit in a plate carrier?) I'm skeptical about the weighted vests, since I've never tried them, and they seem to be either lighter then what I already have, or have a fixed weight for the most part. I think I'd rather run with the old vest anyways.

Any input would be appreciated, either in regards to getting something to run with, random ideas for the plate carrier, or better ways to build endurance.

  • Does Cleverbot connect random people together?

I've started to fool around with this thing called Cleverbot. I type in a question or whatever, and it spits out a computer generated answer. However, something about it is a little fishy. The way it contradicts itself, has no memory of what it said a line or two back, it has spelling errors occasionally, and so forth. Then a quick google search ended up with the idea- it probably does have some automated answers, but to some degree, it is actually connecting two people together. It must be switching users randomly after a few lines or two.

    So I asked it.

"User: Cleverbot connects random people together.

Cleverbot: You're not very clever, then, are you?

User: Cleverbot connects random people together.

Cleverbot: So you are a human then.

User: Are you a human too?

    Cleverbot: Yes.

User: Are you another person typing random stuff into cleverbot.

    Cleverbot: Yes.

User: I suspect that cleverbot just connects random people together.

Cleverbot: Do you think so? What is your name?

User: Bob Melver. Just another random person typing junk into this repackaged chatroom.

Cleverbot: The thing is, if I ask you if you're just a random person on the other end, I still won't be able to tell if you're telling the truth or lying.

I've since asked similar questions many times, and I've gotten mixed results- sometimes the answer comes back confirming my suspicion, sometimes it's a random answer. I think you'll find from your own personal experience, as well as the beginning of my conversation,

Eh. Just my mind wandering. I am curious, however, if anyone else has ever suspected that it is in part driven by connecting random users in this way? Kind of a conspiracy theory, I guess.

  • Steam cannot connect to the internet?

I recently bought Oblivion on Steam for myself and my son. I had meant to get it for them a while back, but I saw it for $7, so I took the too long delayed opportunity.

However, on the computer my son uses, Steam seems to have stopped working. It says that it can't connect to the internet, and to check my network. Funny thing is I can connect to the internet.

Does anybody know a way around this? I tried running Steam with a =clearbeta parameter, deleting all the .blob folders, and running Steam in offline mode, but nothing works.

Can anybody help me? Anything else I can try? Or, is it possible to buy a copy of Oblivion that doesn't require Steam?

  • Which Skylanders addon is the best?

I recently bought me Skylanders: Spyro's adventure for 3DS, and I've just about beaten the storyline in 2 days. At least I'm about to fight Hector, so I think I'm about done.

Eh, it was a brilliant and diabolical scheme, they did. Making me pay extra to begin with to get some figures with the game, then making me want to collect more figures. And now, before I finish the game, they're making me want to unlock the rest of the game, but instead of giving us the entire game, they locked away portions of it and you have to buy toys to get everything you payed for in the beginning. Absolutely diabolical. Great way to make consumers throw more money at them.

Well anyways. I like the game so I'm going to fall for it. I think I'd like to get a couple of the addons. Any one particularly better then the others? Any not worth getting?

  • Why, at 140 lbs, do I have a beer belly...?

It's something I seem to have always had. As long as I can remember I've always had a small beer belly, and then what I can only describe as a muffin top, only it's not because I'm wearing really tight pants. It's just always there. I'm not overweight. I used to be 115 lbs, then I started working out, now I'm 140 lbs. Yet, no matter how much stronger I get, there always seems to be this freaking beer belly, and then my skin sags around my waist.

I don't really care so much about having an obvious 6 pack. However, this is a little unnerving. Even at 5'4, 140 lbs (remember I was 115 before I've started working out) a beer belly, even though I've never even had alcohol in my life anyways, this is a little odd. I'm going to be honest. I don't know jack squat about health. So, if somebody knows if this is normal for some people, if it means I've gotten some bizarre illness, or any idea as to what this might be, please help me out.

  • Is abortion discrimination?

I've spent a lot of time debating over the issue of abortion, and I debate over nearly anything under the sun, then I have just about any other subject. In the aftermath of one of my last discussions, where a good friend of mine, after me and several others gave lengthy descriptions of our personal opinion on the matter of abortion, left me with a point of view I've never heard before.

See, we'd long argued that abortion is a personal choice, or murder, or maybe a form of euthanasia even- I've seen a lot of different takes on it. Most of us are pro-life at heart, however, will say that it's not our place to tell someone else not to have an abortion. It wasn't the case with my friend, however.

He took a fraction of the time we all did, but I don't doubt he had a bigger effect on us then anyone else. His point of view was simple. He told us that we'd never think of legalizing slavery again. So, while we're against discrimination based on WHERE someone is born, why would we allow it based on WHEN? He told us that nobody had the right to decide who of the next generation got a shot at life and who didn't. We don't demand the right to own somebody based on where they were born, so we shouldn't demand the right to allow only certain people, based on our convenience, the right to live.

I've had my own personal arguments. I'm not here to argue with anybody, however I do want to know if anybody else has looked at it this way. I've never heard it come up in discussions on the subject until now. Now, it seems simple, yet I don't know why you don't see people arguing that same case now. It's changed a lot about how I look at it, to be honest. I'm left feeling guilty of over-complicating the issue in politics, when now I've started to see it as a much more black and white moral issue.

Please, if anybody has ever thought of it this way, or argued with people going down this road, or have serious concerns with this way of thinking, or just plain think that I'm an idiot for starting to buy his argument, lemme hear it. I'm craving some new insight into the issue.

  • Space Rangers 2 keeps freezing once it starts?

I got a copy of Space Rangers 2 reboot, however once I installed it, I ran into problems. For one, once I start it, it goes black until I tab out and then back in, but after that, I'll be sitting on the main menu, and nothing will happen. I can move the mouse, but I can't get a response. If I tab out after that, I'll come back to a completely different screen for some reason.

Has anybody else found this problem too?

  • (World of warcraft) A few things I'd like to do with macros?

In honor of getting Star Fox 64 for my DS, I've decided to celebrate by adding some macros to my toons with quotes from Star Fox.

For instance, I have one of my interrupts say "I can't let you do that, Star-(name of target)". Or, my best so far, upon using bladestorm, he says "Do a barrel roll!".

However, other then those, there's not a lot I can do. I was hoping to have my toon respond with a macro, as think it would fit the spirit of Star Fox better. For instance, I get a res, and I'd like to quote one of my favorite lines from Falco- "Gee, I've been saved by Fox, how swell." I don't know of a way to make a macro trigger itself like that, though.

I was also hopping to have him say "Location Confirmed. Sending supplies." when I open a trade window. Or, even better "Uncle Androooosssss!" when he dies. Maybe I'd challenge somebody to a duel and he would say "I've been waiting for you, Star Fox. You know that I control the galaxy."

You get the idea. I want to have a macro that will either activate it self, or will do something like open a trade window. Anything like that. Basically, all I know how to do at this point is have a macro that casts an ability and says something, so if anybody could tell me how to do anything outside of that, I'd appreciate it.

  • How do I find James McCloud in Star Fox 64?

I played the original Star Fox 64 for a short while back in the day, and got the 3DS version the other day. I remember seeing James McCloud in Assault in the form of a hallucination from the queen Aparoid, and thought this whole time that that was the only time he ever appeared. In any of the games since Star Fox 64.

However, I recently stumbled upon pictures of James in Star Fox 64, but I don't know how to find him.

  • Did anybody ever believe in Obama's "Hope"...?

Ever since the elections in 08, there's been a huge push in our commander in chief's advertising to make us see him as a "beacon of hope", I guess I should say. That he's going to bring about change. And while I saw many people stick up for his policies in debates at school, or lunch hour at work, and anywhere outside of those too, something was out of place to me. I couldn't quite grasp what it was.

Now that the Dow is plummeting again, and after the disaster that was Obama's last attempt at a...what was he trying to do again? I donno. All I remember was him trying to make us think it was everyone else's fault. Anyway. I keep talking to my friends/coworkers about this, on both ends of the political spectrum, and regardless of where they were on that spectrum, I keep seeing this fear of a double dip in the recession. But, what surprised me, is that it hardly surprised anybody else! It just seems to have come, and I keep hearing comments about how people thought it was bound to happen, or that they didn't think our recovery was going to last.

I don't mean to come off as trying to instigate an anti-Obama rally, (I don't have any pitchforks to give out, anyway) but this is an honest question I have. Now, he is my commander in chief and all, so I intend to be supportive where I can, but this is one thing I can't get out of my head- plenty of people would stick up for Obama back in the day, some still do, but now that the idea of a recurring recession is on the horizon, it seem people have lost faith, and this has made me doubt that there was a solid belief in him to begin with.

I'm saying this, because I have a suspicion that maybe while most of us would enter a debate on his behalf before, it seems that in the end, the only "Hope" anybody seemed to have was winning that debate, and the hope we saw under his name back in the day. Now, granted, I work at a generally more conservative environment. So, my coworkers were for the most part backing Republicans, but I see it outside as well, although to a smaller degree. Maybe it's just the area I'm not, or my perception, which is of course subject to error (and erroneous assumptions, which is why I'm here- to see if I'm the only one to imagine this) Moving on. Is it like I just mentioned, that I could be the only one imagining this...? Has anybody else felt this too? It seems to be something that I have confirmed in the few situations I've been in regarding this already- people say they would stick up for Obama, but then ask them if they really thought he was going to turn things around, and you get the same thing I've been mentioning- they admit that they had false hope, or something that flat out disturbs me- they admit that they stuck up for him because he was popular, and never really knew if he would bring about his promises.

  • Is there an RTS with customizable skins?

I've been hoping to find an RTS game with a feature like this. I don't know how to mod, although I've tried to pick it up before. I want to take an RTS game- anything from Age of Empires to Total War to Warcraft, that has the ability to draw my own skins. I simply can't seem to make heads or tails of modding. I don't know squat when it comes to coding, and that at the very minimum seems to be a requirement for even starting any form of modding.

It's just for something of a hobby of mine. I've been developing a personal work of fiction, and I had been hoping to make a campaign representing a war in my fiction, in a Renaissance like period. I would love something where I could just color the unit as I see fit. I don't really mind just settling just picking the appropriate color to match the army I'm representing when I'm just doing it for giggles, but I'd love to be able to draw my own custom uniforms and faces, so that I could see what my imaginary armies would actually look like fighting. Like I said- I've seen people do this, particularly with Total War. I love to see other people's custom armies, but I simply don't have a clue how to do it for myself.

So, I'm wondering if there is such a game out there that would allow me to draw my own unit's skins. I honestly can't seem to find anything. I'd love to be able to do anything from draw my own uniforms, to be able to adjust their appearance as a whole. Ideally I'd love to be able to take a generic knight or whatever and adjust him into another race with a human like form, but I seriously doubt there's anything like that. If anybody know of an RTS where I can manage something like this, please tell me. I'd greatly appreciate it.

  • How do I get the Lord of the Clans campaign to work?

I want to get this Campaign, since this is one my favorite parts of the Lore. However, my PC can't open it, and it seems that I need this w3n extension, which I only see on really sleazy looking websites that want a monthly fee for their services.

I don't know whether to trust any of them, or even believe if it really exists. However, I really want to go back to Warcraft 3 and play this campaign I missed the first time. I'm running windows 7, by the way.

If anybody can shed a little light on this, or tell me an easy way to get it working, please do!
