Mi opinión es un poco polémica, creo. Mucha de la gente quiere pensar que el final es feliz, y sólo es “simbólico” en cuanto al parecido a Romeo y Juliet. Pero yo sé que simplemente no es el caso. Para mí, es obvio que los niños murieron en la ola. Primero, como dije, tiene muchos aspectos semejantes a Romeo y Juliet, y por eso los creadores de la película habrían querido que el final fuera como lo de la obra. En la obra, ellos murieron por su amor, y en este caso, es por la amistad. Segundo, la mirada que los niños compartieron fue una de verdadero contentamiento. Una mirada así solo puede existir en los ojos de unos ángeles o las personas que han llegado a un momento ultimato en su vida. Además, creo que hay un mensaje sobre la retribución para los padres y las familias que no dejan de pelear. Es una forma de “karma”, en un sentido. Pero, aunque esto es mi opinión, yo acepto el hecho que los escritores también querían ser ambiguos y misteriosos en su tratamiento de esa escena, para que la pública lo discutiera. Hacen esto para parecer más profundo (algo que Holden Caulfield llamaría “phony”) y me fijo en esto en muchas historias.
