  • Does anyone know if there is a playground USA map in a school parking lot in Indiana?

I need to find one of those big painted playground maps of the US nearby, and I'm in Indianapolis. I need to use it for a photo shoot. Even KY/IL/OH would be all right as well. Thanks!

  • Can you identify these aerial pictures near Phoenix?

I took these within about 7 minutes of each other, on approach to Phoenix from the East. I'm normally good at finding things on Google Earth, but I am stumped. Any of them would be helpful, please, to let me get my bearings and identify the rest. Thanks!

www.mcglaun.com/phx is the folder the 11 pics are in. You may have to get them individually:

  • What animals are these? Foxes?

    www.mcglaun.com/IMAG0790.jpg

It is one of those old stoles, I believe made out of fox. But the animals are very small - maybe 12" at most (not including the tail). The bluish cast on the top picture is my camera's fault - the fur is gray. They don't look like silver foxes, but I don't know what other kind of fox they could be. Any help would be appreciated.

  • iris rhizomes - replanting?

I some real help with these dwarf yellow iris that I have. They were last divided about 3 years ago, and it was time to do it again. I waited too long and have now just gotten around to doing it. I know it is December and I am in Indiana, but we got a good rain and the ground was soft so I grabbed the window. This time, I separated all of the rhizomes, intending to keep or give them away (maybe sell them). Now I have a garbage can full of them, and I think I may have a problem. In pulling these up, is it too late to save a few and replant them right where they were? Or did I just guarantee that they won't bloom in the Spring? Do I need to keep the roots on them? What happens if I do cut the roots off the healthy rhizomes - does that kill them or cause them not to be viable any longer? (I have done this to a very few of them, but stopped. Those ones do still have the very short fan.) Also, is it correct that you do not "plant" rhizomes like bulbs? If I do put them in the soil so that the fan doesn't show, they will not grow - correct? Finally, what's the best way to store them until time to replant next Fall? Biggest question I guess is can I remove the roots? Sorry for all the questions but you only get one shot every year to do this and I am a bit on the new side. Any advice will be appreciated - thanks!

  • help with dog training?

Huge problem! We have a 3yo Bichon Frise, sweetest dog in the world to us and our kids. But very territorial. He is fine out in public with other people and dogs, but whenever anyone comes to our door he goes ballistic. This is OK with me (he is a perfect watchdog) except that he got out today when we opened the door just a crack and nipped at my daughter's friend on the porch. I need to IMMEDIATELY train him with some sort of "stand down - it's OK" command, and have no idea at his age where or how to start. Please help, someone who knows dog behavior. We must do this on our own, since I would like for us in the family to be the only ones who can issue the stand down command.

  • old tear-off wall calendar like in school?

Question is about those old, small wall calendars that said "today is..." and had a big, roundy number in the middle with block letters for the month and day. You tore one page off each day. I saw them in school, and they're also the kind of thing you might see in an old post office or general store. Old-timey. I need to buy one, or better yet, find images of one on-line to make the letter and number fonts and get the layout right for an old-time web page that needs one. Any help please?

  • show file extensions in windows?

This is silly. Something has happened to my Vista, and all of a sudden file extensions are not being displayed. This would be a no-brainer, but there is NOTHING in Control Panel that leads to the checkbox for "show extensions for known file types", and nothing in the folder menus themselves. Please don't copy and paste anything from the simplified answers available on the Internet, as I've tried them all. I need to know where in the registry I would go to change this, because I'm stumped. dan@mcglaun.com

  • Manitoba provincial road 308 between Sprague and Braintree?

I thinnk this road is paved up to Moose Lake, but it looks like it's gravel for about 70k to E. Braintree. Is this a bad route to take because it's gravel? Will my car and tires make it? Or is it not bad at all?

  • Eating fruit and losing weight?

I have some weight to lose - like 50 pounds. I have made a decision to eat healthier. I have had NO fast food, NO high-calorie garbage, for a week. I have only been eating small pieces of beef, turkey, chicken, but most of all - fruit. I mean, I am eating cherries, kiwi, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, nuts, orange juice, grape juice, snap peas, tomatoes, eggs, flaxseed bread, salads with olive oil instead of dressing, and loving it. I munch on these instead of potato chips and bread and cheeseburgers, but my wife (120 lbs) says I will never lose weight because fruit has too much sugar in it. I think that the sugar in fruit is good, and keeps your metabolism high. I have lost 5 pounds in this first week. I need to know from people who really know - if I can keep this up, and absolutely retune my taste buds so that McDonald's tastes like garbage and an apple tastes like a miracle, will I be in a position where the sugar and calories from these helps me lose weight. Or is it possible to maintain a huge belly eating too much of "healthy" foods? Can a raw vegan overeat?!!!! thanks for HONEST answers.

  • shostakovich 7 question?

I am a classical musician, and have loved music deeply all my life. Shostakovich is of course a master, and I love his music, but I cannot for the life of me get over the first movement of the 7th symphony. Can someone please explain to me (technically or otherwise) the purpose of the ostinato melody that after about five repetitions grates on me so much I can't even stand to listen any more? What is the significance of this melody, and of its repetition, and of the connection to the other movements (as well as other material within the first movement)? help!

  • Question about tax basis of an IRA that lost money?

I have a standard brokerage account which was a rollover from a traditional IRA. I made many deposits to it, which (because I was enrolled in a 401k at work) were not deductible. I know that all these post-tax dollars are the 'basis' of the account. Now, I am going to liquidate it and pay the 10% penalty and taxes, but again, only on the basis of the account as I've already paid taxes on a portion. THE QUESTION IS: At one point I rolled it from a standard IRA to a brokerage account which then proceeded to lose a bunch of money. I don't think that loss would be deductible if all the money were pre-tax - BUT, because a portion of the balance is post-tax, can I take any capital loss on that big loss the account took?

  • Chinchilla breathing?

Just got a chinchilla - didn't know not to use air freshener - cleaned the room with Febreze. Now it is showing labored breathing just a couple hours later and is lethargic. We've taken it out of the room. Is it vet time, or will it recover after a few hours?

  • A couple of questions about the big bang?

I have a math degree and have read quite a bit about the big bang. I have a good background in astronomy and physics. Now, I need to have simple, straightforward answers to two questions:

    1) Is inflation the reason that we have a 13-billion ly horizon beyond which we cannot see? It seems that if the universe never expanded at a speed greater than that of light, then everything that happened everywhere at every time would lie within our light cone, and would be able to be seen. Someone please explain to me how there have been things that have happened over 13Bya when at that time the universe was very small - smaller than 13Bly across!!

    2) since space is not expanding into anything, but rather space itself is expanding, doesn't that mean that the yardstick used for measuring the speed of light is also expanding? In other words, no matter how "big" or "small" the universe is or was at any point, its inhabitants have to see it as about the same size since its fabric (the medium through which light moves) also has to expand as it does. This may also relate to question 1 in some way.

Someone please try to give this a shot for me, including good internet articles is appropriate. I would appreciate an e-mail discussion as well; my e-mail is dan@mcglaun.com

    Thanks!

  • Baritone Horn sheet music????

My daughter is pretty good at the Baritone, but has only been playing for about a year. I am a pro musician and she is not bad at all (range is an issue but articulation, tone quality etc is not bad). But I play the clarinet and do not know any Baritone Music (group 5) for her to take to contest. Any brass players/educators out there who can point me to something? her band director is slightly dragging his feet on selecting something and so I need help. Thanks!
