  • What does it mean for a PERSON to be greater than the sum of its parts?

I'm referring to the movie "Flipped" and I adore the movie, but I wanted to ask specifically what others thought it means for someone to be greater than the sum of her/his parts? I understand that it usually means that when you add stuff together then the whole is so much better than the little things just by themselves, but what does it mean for a person (by themselves) to be greater than the sum of its parts? Is it like. . . small traits of a person being added together to make a great person or. . . ?

  • Why did this guy who has a girlfriend ask me to dance? Am I overthinking it? How do I get over this?

I've never had a boyfriend and I've never really done anything with a guy in general. There's a guy, let's name him Luke, who I know from my sorority and he's a really sweet guy. He's just the type of guy that everyone likes. Well, I haven't talked to him much, but when I do, I realize that he's a sweetheart, but he happens to be dating a girl. Her and I are acquaintances because she's also in the sorority. They are adorable together and I mean that whole-heartedly. Well, we had our sorority formal last night and I was getting ready to leave because I'm not one for dancing. Luke was actually at this formal because he was being honored for something but I hadn't talked to him all night. Also, his girlfriend wasn't there probably because she was busy with school stuff. Anyway, I was invited to go out to a bar with another friend and her date and I was about to say yes, when Luke comes up from behind me and asks to dance with me. I was a little confused since we hadn't talked all night but I said sure and we danced and talked. He was such a gentleman and the sad part was, that was my first ever being asked to dance by a guy or even dancing with a guy so my head was kind of spinning. Of course, that didn't help that I already thought he was really nice so now I can't really stop thinking about it. Is there any way to just get over this stupid crush? I keep overthinking about why he asked me to dance. But I respect that he has an amazing girlfriend so I want to move on. Any tips?

  • Why would using NMR of a grignard dye be unlikely to provide a useful spectrum? (Organic chemistry lab?)?

So I did a lab that involved making malachite green using a grignard reagent. I'm working on the post lab and it's asks "why would submitting an NMR sample of your dye solution be unlikely to provide a useful spectrum?" I'm not sure what the answer is though, since I figured NMR would be able to show if the product was made. Is it possible that there would many impurities or is it possible that it would be pointless due to the fact that the formation of the dye should show the product was made?

  • Is spending almost $80 for the kids I watch too much?

I've been watching 3 kids (2, 4, and 10) for almost a semester now and of course, they asked me for Easter presents. . .which I was okay with. But they BEGGED AND BEGGED AND BEGGED for Nerf guns (the 2 boys) and of course, Nerf guns are freaking expensive.

But, I already said I would, thinking I could buy them $10 guns. But now, they each want $20 guns. . . and again, I said yes thinking $40 is not too bad. Well the guns are more like $25 guns and that makes the total $50, plus they want to buy darts and I have the 2 year old to buy a gift for. The 10 year old gave me $8.00 for darts, but the darts will cost me $14.00 which ultimately is me paying for $6.00 of it. Then, the 2-year old's gift I picked out is $13. That brings my total to a whopping $78.00. Minus the $8.00 I was given makes me spend $70.00 for the kids I watch.

I have the money, but I kind of think it's ridiculous that I'm spending half of a paycheck I get in a week on the kids that I watch (who hit me, kick me, scratch me, etc).

  • Why would a guy ask a girl to study out of the blue?

I met this guy in class and we sit near each other in class which involves talking about lecture. Typically, I only talk to him in class, once a week. Recently, he messaged me on Facebook asking for help on homework. I wasn't much help because I hadn't started it yet. A few days later during the next week, he asked for help on homework and then proceeded to ask if I wanted to study together which never has happened.

We studied together for 3 hours the next day, but I felt like he was really nice, but we didn't really get to know each other. Instead, we really did study which I actually appreciated. We vaguely talked about ourselves as we walked to get to the place to study, but that was about it and then he asked to try and study again together that night. He was too busy studying for another exam so we didn't get together.

Instead, he texted me for questions on certain material in the class.

Now, some people have told me that must obviously means he likes me because he asked me to study rather than somebody else to study in the class. I didn't get that vibe at all because we didn't talk too much about ourselves. Don't get me wrong, he's nice and he will help me out with class, but that's the extent of our conversations. In addition, he knows I did well on the last exam and he didn't so it's possible that he just wanted help and he wanted to study. Other people disagree saying that he probably just wanted to study. So, I was just wondering what other people thought. .

  • Blurry pictures from my Nikon D3300?

    Hello everyone--

I've had my Nikon D3300 since this past July (Summer of 2016) and have found issues whenever I take photos because they come out blurry. It's frustrating me because if I want to get a certain angle/distance of an object, I choose where I stand and such but then the image is out of focus both in the viewfinder and in the picture I take. However, if I adjust the focal length then the picture will start being more in focus.

If my camera is in autofocus then it won't auto focus and the camera will not take the picture because the camera believes the shot is out of focus. However, if I put the camera into manual focus, it will allow me to take a picture, but the picture can be blurry or not blurry depending if I've changed the focal length. But then, I'm caused to move because what I want in the frame is now being changed because of that weird blurriness.

My lens is a Nikon AF-P NikkoR 18-55 mm DX and it was the kit lens that came with my camera. It does not have the switch that allows me to change it to manual focus or autofocus, so I'm kind of at a loss at what to do. Also, if I do anything with the focus ring, nothing changes.

Can any of you experts out there give me some advice and tell me what I'm doing wrong or just what's wrong?

I want to get a new lens, but I didn't think there should be the issue of focal length and whether or not the picture is in focus.

  • How to study for first organic chemistry midterm?

I have a professor who is somewhat of a harda$$. He can be somewhat condescending and he doesn't really help when you email him because he doesn't allow any technical questions to be asked via email because it takes too long.

He also isn't flexible on office hours.

Anyway, I'm finding that he has NONE of his old exams online to help students practice so I have no idea how to study organic chemistry without practice problems. And the old exams from other professors at my college are up, but a lot of them don't cover the same material he covers in class for the first exam.

I emailed him and he said to focus on lecture material (well duh) and homework. But he completely ignored my question on practice problems and I am stressing out. I'm running out of ideas and was wondering if any past organic chemistry students have any advice?

  • Can I bring a backpack, a purse, and a carry-on suitcase onto a United Airlines plane?

I'm flying in about a week or so but I'm driving to NY first and then flying back. I'm bring a camera bag (that's a backpack) as well as a purse and a carry-on suitcase and I'm unsure if I can bring all three? If not, then I'm not really sure what to do . . .

  • Should I do the other job interview if I've been offered another job?

So, I'm at a bit of a dilemma. I just did a drug test for my first job interview for my summer job (and I will pass because I don't do drugs) but I also scheduled a job interview for this week, but it might end up being that I have to change the time of the interview to next week.

I'm assuming because I got the drug test that I'll be getting a job interview because 1.) I'll pass and 2.) Most companies won't have you do a test unless they were planning on hiring you.

I'm also planning on going to NY for a week to help my friend move and the place where I did the drug test said it would be fine, but I don't know about the other place.

I'm not sure if I should just completely cancel my job interview for the 2nd place or if I should do it just in case I don't get the other job (even though the 2nd place will better pay). The 2nd place is a nanny company and I know some families aren't exactly flexible as to time off so I'm just concerned about that one week.

On the otherhand, I'm not really worried about what job is better because it's a seasonal job and I'll be going back to college in August.

Can anybody give me some outside opinions, I'd really appreciate it.

  • Naming Polyatomic ions and giving their formulas?

This might seem like a really silly question, but I've been confused about this since I've started my first chemistry class in college. It's been a while since I took chemistry back in high school (like 2 years) and I don't remember exactly how you distinguish between -ite and -ate with ions.

I mean, I UNDERSTAND that Sulfite is SO3(2-) and SO4(3-) is Sulfate and this is because the suffix -ite means that there's less oxygen and -ate means w/ oxygen, but how exactly am I supposed to know that the ions formed for sulfur and oxygens are SO3 and SO4 and not . . . SO5 ad SO6.

Again, this might seem like a redundant question, but I've been staring at a period table and I still don't understand all the oxidation stuff. I know that sulfur has an oxidation level of 2- or whatever because it's in the oxygen family/group but why is it that sulfite is still given aven though it's got more oxygen than the "normal" oxidation of sulfur?

Maybe I'm remembering it all wrong though. Can someone help me?

  • Chemistry question?

So this might be a silly question, but I haven't taken chemistry in about 3 years and I'm now taking it again in high school for my major and I'm doing a review assignment online, however I'm confused about the chemical formula for zinc bromide?

How am I supposed to know that it's ZnBr(2) if they don't actually indicate that the charge of Zn is 2+? You know, if it says zinc (II) bromide then I would understand WHY it's ZnBr(2) but, if it doesn't is that just a memorization thing?

    Thanks!

  • Would being a college student and a nanny burn me out?

I'm currently going to be an upcoming sophomore in college and I'm majoring in Neuroscience. I'm wondering though if being a nanny wouldn't work because it would cause me to be extremely exhausted and I wouldn't have time to get my schoolwork done?

I was planning on doing an interview with a man with a 9 year old daughter who would need a nanny from 3pm-10pm which are pretty long hours (Monday through Friday) and maybe some Saturdays. However, here's the thing:

    My class schedule is this:

Monday: 8AM-2:30PM (3 classes basically)--obviously there are breaks between

    Tuesday: 11:00-2:00

    Wednesday: 8AM-12PM

    Thursday: 8AM-4:30PM

    Friday: One 8AM class

I wasn't sure if that would be too exhausting for me to deal or not and I'd appreciate some advice!

  • Why am I getting back acne all of a sudden and how do I get rid of it?

I'm super upset right now because I was just in the shower and discovered that I have a break out of back acne in the middle of my back (basically it's right in the middle--where my spine lines up and it's right below where my bra straps hit). I just started college about a month ago (or I moved in 4 months ago) and I've never had back acne before I have had chest acne but never back acne and this is making me super angry and frustrated. I don't understand what's causing it. Is it my new sheets? Is it because of the fact that I sweat more now a days because I have a backpack on and have to walk in hot weather? Is it the water at my school? Is it my diet? I don't get it. Because my face is fine and my chest acne really isn't that bad. But now all of a sudden I have like 8 pimples on my back. And by the way, I shower every night and wash my body so it's not that I have bad hygiene.

So my questions are: what caused it? And how do I get rid of it? (Do I need to start washing my back with facial/acne wash? Do I need to start cleaning my sheets? What???)

Thanks for any of you who answer!

  • Are selective colleges always the best ones?

I'm curious to hear what you guys think about this. I was doing research on looking at graduate school and I noticed that the college I'll be attending next year is less selective than the "competing" one in-state. . .however the one that I'm attending is "higher ranked" according to College Niche (which could be an unreliable source. . . but I've seen that in a lot of other website too as well). . . so I'm just wondering why that is and if there are other state universities in other states that have the same type of deal going on and amy somebody could explain why that is. I'm just wondering why it would be that my college is "higher ranked" but not as selective as other colleges that are "more selective" not as highly ranked.

    Thanks.

  • What classes should I take/how many classes should I take in college?

    Hi!

So I'll be a freshmen at college next year and I'll be majoring in Neuroscience and I'm registering for class on Friday. I'll also be doing college marching band and I'll be doing choir. I don't want to take the average 15 credit hours, I'd rather take 12. Anyway, I have to take some GE's of course but I also have to take major requirements and I also am thinking about minoring in Biochemistry. So in other words, I don't really know what the heck to take. I want to at least take 2 GE's and then maybe one major requirement.

    Basically, here's the break down:

3 Credit Hours-Upper Division Writing, 3 Credit Hours-Historical Context, 3 Credit Hours-Human Diversity, 3 Credit Hours-U.S Context, 6 Credit Hours (3 need to be upper division)-Literature and the Arts, 13 Credit Hours-Natural Science

However, for my neuroscience major they recommend taking these classes in the first 2 years:

Intro to Neuroscience, Lab for Neuroscience, Genetics,Statistics, chemistry, calculus, and Ancillary Biology.

They also suggest taking Molecular Biology and Lab, General Biology w/ Lab, Chemistry, or Calculus.

However, I already got a 5 on the AP Calculus test and I don't want to take calculus again. . .I don't want to backtrack in math either.

Can anybody give me some advice?
