Can a non-activated smartphone be tracked via GPS after dialing free 911 with it?
I like to use a certain phone as a WiFi only tablet, but want it handy for 911 emergencies. If I use it to dial 911, can it be continually tracked AFTER the call ends (via its GPS chip) or does it need cellular service for tracking to work?

It sticks out on a satellite map but I'm having trouble identifying it using various sources.
2 AnswersGeography3 years agoHas anyone calculated the amount of oil wasted by smartphone engine idlers?
I constantly see people sitting in their cars with faces lit by glowing screens, squandering finite-at-any-price oil, not caring about climate change or anything but their phones and other self-centered distractions. They do it in all kinds of weather, so heat or A/C is a limited excuse.
8 AnswersGlobal Warming3 years agoMentally, how are trophy hunters and "pest" or "varmint" shooters different from Stephen Paddock, aside from the species involved?
Watch some videos of wildlife serial killers in action:

What would those people shoot if it wasn't legal to snuff animals for ego-based recreation and rifle testing? I'm well aware of their cover stories like "pest control" but let's get to their root motives. I think all mass killers are all cut from the same evil cloth, it's just a matter of technical legality.
9 AnswersHunting4 years agoDoes the industry really believe wind turbines have a "small footprint" based solely on their tower-pad acreage?
If you were surrounded by dozens of 450-foot towers would you only notice the ground directly beneath them? Of course not! Their true footprint is their vertical blight plus access roads, logged forests, etc. It's called a lie when oilmen pretend ANWR drilling would have minimal impact, but the media allows pro-wind people to get away with the same ruse. 14 AnswersGlobal Warming4 years agoDid the world's scenery become expendable just because global warming is a problem?
I'm talking about industrial wind turbines. Far too big, far too many, unreliable, made with fossil fuels.
13 AnswersGlobal Warming4 years agoAre few DVD multi-disc changers being made anymore?
In searches I see only used models of DVD 5-disc carousel changers, at least for famous brands, e.g. the Sony DVP-NC85H. CD-changers seem to be the only ones really left. I know there are also few if any Blu-Ray changers but DVD is the focus of this question.
2 AnswersHome Theater4 years agoWhy are grocery store stockers allowed to put their hands on the floor when stocking shelves?
I think floors are the dirtiest part of most buildings, with all sort of things tracked onto them from outside, bathrooms, etc. When I see a worker stocking grocery shelves with one hand resting on the (bare) floor for support, and handling food boxes that I will later touch, it seems to violate health codes. Do others notice this, and are there actual laws about it?
3 AnswersOther - Health4 years agoLogical fallacy of "begging the question." What does the wording mean, exactly?
I can't quite get my mind around the use of the word "begging" when explaining the meaning of this logical fallacy, though I know what it means. Can someone reword it to make more direct sense? It reads like begging someone to ask a question, which doesn't fit the meaning.
5 AnswersWords & Wordplay4 years agoIs it rude for a coworker to "improve" on emails you already sent to a group of people?
Part of my job involves sending alerts about product issues to various salespeople. I prefer to do it in a brief table format to save time, and it's just technical info anyhow. An overly ambitious coworker has twice replied to the whole group with a lot more wordiness, including (unnecessary) details about the same info I originally sent. The first time it instantly irritated me, but they passed it off as them "helping." I see it as a not so subtle attempt to out-compete me, or rude at the very least. This (female) coworker is nice in general, though prone to sulking and not speaking when in a bad mood. Has anyone had similar experiences with that personality type?
4 AnswersEtiquette4 years agoWhy are wind turbine advocates apathetic about their impact on scenery?
When you explain the obvious blight of giant towers to them, they change the subject to old damage, especially coal mines. To me, it's just a diversion. They can't be blind, so what gives? Were they never really environmentalists?
9 AnswersGlobal Warming5 years agoDo people think they must idle their engines to charge their smartphones?
I'm tired of seeing fuel wasted as people sit around in cars checking their Facebook status or talking on the phone. I'm sure some don't care that oil is finite or that idling wears out engines faster, but others might think the small current draw of a charging phone will somehow deplete their large 12V car battery. If technical ignorance is wasting that much oil, there should be laws against it. I call it smartphone idling because I don't remember this much of it before "mobile devices" arrived. It occurs in all types of weather, not just A/C or heater-dependent, and people idle for minor comforts, anyhow.

4 AnswersOther - Cars & Transportation5 years agoWhy do Russians often sound like they're arguing in regular native language conversations?
They (typically men) usually sound like cab drivers bickering over something. Gibberish example: "Meeerj! Nomashunko, bradushka!" (spoken in semi belligerent tones). I don't understand the Russian language but the tone comes across as riled up. Many of you must know what I mean.
3 AnswersLanguages5 years agoWhat is origin of photo showing mummy-like person on chair or bed?
I keep seeing this photo and its original source is hard to find. Old movie scene? Random weird stuff created recently? Does anyone know without just guessing?
3 AnswersMovies5 years agoWhy put tooth-bumping ridges on the back of a toothbrush head?
Various models (e.g. Colgate) have hard plastic ridges perpendicular to the long axis of the toothbrush head. The ridges just bump into my teeth, making it impossible to brush comfortably until I sand them off. I'd have to open my mouth like a fish (and let toothpaste spill out) to avoid that bumping on the opposite row of teeth. What is the purpose of those confounded ridges?
3 AnswersDental5 years agoDoes today's typical young woman just seem like a butt, a hairstyle and a cellphone?
I'm not a misogynist or chauvinist. This is just a general observation that I can't shake. It's what I first notice at a distance, and closer up as well. That generic impression lingers until I know them better, but for many it always remains. Maybe someone else gets this mental concept?
3 AnswersSingles & Dating6 years agoWhy does Rachel McAdams keep those moles?
I spent the better part of True Detective (Season 2) watching for the big one to appear from under her hair. She's such an otherwise attractive and shapely actress. I don't get it. Celebrities spends tons of money on plastic surgery but moles seem sacred or psychologically invisible to many. Do they think it makes them stand out from the pack, or gives them a trademark?
1 AnswerCelebrities6 years agoShould Toyota rename the Prius to something less hoity-toity sounding?
I would suggest a down-to-earth name like the "Toyota MPG." It would define the purpose of the car and not invite negative associations with liberalism and elitism. I'm sure the negative reaction to the car among conservatives (who eschew conservation) is tied to the gut feel of its name. It comes off as pious, pretentious or puss... (you get my point). Seriously, the name alone has prevented me from buying the car, as a male who strongly favors conserving oil but is biologically stuck with an ego. I really think they should re-badge an otherwise fine piece of engineering.
3 AnswersToyota6 years agoIs there a device that can reduce a fan's speed and noise?
I have a 3-speed box fan that's too noisy even at its lowest speed when I want to sleep. It sits on a windowsill drawing air in from outside in the summer. Is there some sort of control I can place between it and the main outlet to reduce its speed with a dial? I assume it would have to reduce amperage, not the the (120V) mains voltage.
2 AnswersOther - Electronics6 years agoSource of pseudo mug shots used in online advertisements?
This girl in particular shows up a lot (link below). Can anyone find more photos of her? There's an Asian girl who has a similar ruffled look but I can't find her at the moment. I doubt these are actual mugshots but the whole manipulative concept is annoying.
