  • Called in sick for second day in a row...Bad idea?

I work in customer service for a small company, I have about eight coworkers who do what I do. Anyways, we get sick time accruals each month, but the company is also really flexible and allows us to work at home. So I, and everyone else, tries to resort to this as much as possible if we're not feeling well but able to work. Anyways, Sunday I came down with a stomach virus and threw up like ten times and had diarrhea, sorry if too much info. I couldn't even keep down water/7up. I called my boss that night to let him know I'll need Monday off. Yesterday I was pretty out of it but wasn't throwing up, still was having some stomach problems though. I was able to keep down fluids and eat applesauce and jello. Tried eating some chicken noodle soup/crackers and it didn't settle too well, and I had a crazy headache in the evening probably because I hadn't eaten enough or I was still dehydrated. At that point it was like 7pm and was about to go to bed, and just couldn't imagine myself going from that to dealing with customers within fifteen hours. I decided to call in again, last night, so I can get my energy level back up and hopefully some food in me. Was this really bad of me? I'm not trying to be lazy or a slacker or anything. I don't get this sick very often, if I do it's usually a cold and I telecommute like I mentioned. I feel so guilty :(

  • How do so many younger people afford to fly? (High School & College Students)?

I've noticed so many younger people, like ages 16-early 20s getting into flying and getting their licenses. How exactly does everyone afford it? A lot of them also seem to have these camera setups (multiple GoPros, etc) which is easily at least $500. Do their parents just pay for everything?

I had to wash planes every weekend in high school to get my license. Now I'm 21 and in college, and work 32 hours and make $14/hr, and I still can't afford to fly as much as a lot of people my age who are getting their ratings. And a lot of them I know seem to either not work or work but make less than I do.

Granted it's still a lot of work to get your ratings, but the financial aspect is half the hurdle, and it's so frustrating to see it come so easily to some people! I know I shouldn't compare my life, but ugh. I'll keep doing what I'm doing, I know I'll eventually get there.

  • Friends that won't hang out with you unless their boyfriend/girlfriend goes with?

One of my good friends recently got into a relationship with this girl. We've been friends for for about eight years and this is the first time he's had a girlfriend while I've known him.

Anyways, I met her and she's really nice. But after asking if he wanted to go snowboarding in a week he said "No because [insert girlfriend's name] is working". And this has happened a couple times already.

So how do you handle friendships where your friend can't go anywhere without his/her significant other?

I mean, I understand to an extent, but it's just kinda frustrating and hurts a little bit.

  • Will I have problems buying alcohol on my 21st birthday with the vertical/under 21 license?

I turn 21 in four days, and I definitely plan to go out and have some drinks. My only concern is, living in California, I have the vertical ID which differentiates those under 21. And it also says that's I'm under 21.

The license doesn't expire until 2017, so I could technically keep it. I plan on renewing it though after my birthday to get a standard one.

But in the meantime, will I experience trouble buying alcohol with this vertical under 21 license?

I just feel like they're going to scrutinize my license and possibly refuse me service, which in that case I would be really upset and offended.

Just want some heads up on what to expect.

  • Car seat covers for Toyota Celica?

I am having so much trouble finding seat covers for the driver/passenger seats of my '03 Celica. If you're familiar with this car, you know that they have those 'sporty' bucket leather seat things.

I got a 'universal' cover and it's too baggy because the seats are thinner than most cars.

    Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

This is what the seats look like:

  • Being gay disgusts me, but I have no attraction to women?

I'm a 20 year old guy. I came out as gay when I was 16. I've had a couple short relationships.

But recently I feel like I've lost pretty much all my interest in guys. Like the idea of kissing a guy or having any form of sexual contact disgusts me. Like I don't have anything against gay people or anything, I just personally think it's bleh.

Also I have no attraction to women. So I'm kinda outta luck there. Like I've tried, but I just can't force myself.

Any ideas? I don't what I am, or what I can do :(

  • Should I drop a class with a 'B' to save GPA? Ws vs low GPA?

I'm in my second to last semester at community college and will be transferring next Fall (2014).

My GPA is current cumulative GPA is a 3.0, I know that's super shitty. But my first semester I did really bad coming out of high school as a 2.0 student.

My first semester I got a 2.5 then the three following semester: 3.0, 3.3, and 3.0.

I have 3 classes this semester (Statistics, General Biology (GenEd requirement), and second semester Spanish).

So far, after first rounds of exams, I'm looking at an A in both Statistics and Spanish.

But I'm looking at a B in Biology. I don't know why I took Bio as I already took a physical science with a lab (you need a lab). I could have taken anthropology to fulfill the life science requirement.

If I get a B in Biology (which I probably will), I'll be sitting at a 3.08 cumulative GPA after this semester.

If I drop Biology and get the two As, then I'm looking at a 3.2 cumulative at the end of this semester.

I would just need to take one political science class next semester (lower division major transfer prereq). I was also going to take third semester Spanish, as its my minor. So that would leave me with two classes and I'd be able to work 32 hours a week.

If I have to take PolySci, Anthro, and Spanish I wouldn't be able to work as much.

I guess I could also forget Spanish and just take PolySci and Anthro and take Spanish over summer or Fall semester (or concurrently enroll fall at the community college for Spanish).

What do you think would be best? Get myself to a higher GPA? Or take the lower GPA?

I haven't had my first exam in Biology yet, that's in two weeks. I'll study hard for that and I guess I can consider my options more closely after that.

Withdraw deadline is mid-October I believe.

Also, I have 3 'Ws' on my transcript. My first semester I withdrew from two classes (as I mentioned before I wasn't doing well that semester). And last semester I withdrew from one class because I changed my major and didn't need that class anymore.

Will four Ws completely destroy my chances of getting in anywhere?

    What would look better?

    -3.08 & 3 Ws

    or

    -3.2 & 4 Ws

    Thanks for your help!

  • I'm not going to get drunk on my 21st birthday, am I a loser?

I'm 20, obviously, and turn 21 in a few months. I go to a community college, but I've had my fair share of getting drunk. And honestly, it's not my thing. I hate acting like an idiot and not being in control of myself, and I hate getting sick and feeling like crap the next day. Why anyone purposefully enjoys doing this to themselves, I don't know.

I feel like it's expected that you get wicked drunk on your 21st birthday. But I'm really not at all interested.

I just look forward to being able to go out and have a drink or two, not get drunk. I smoke weed, and I'm the same way with weed. I enjoy getting a nice high, but I hate when I smoke with friends who want to get super blazed and high as possible.

It makes things so much more less enjoyable to me when you are trying to reach a certain extremity. Why not just enjoy the buzz, the ride, the journey?

I'm not saying I dislike drinking. I do like it, but I kinda look at drink making as an art. And I want to enjoy that drink, not pound it down.

Same thing with weed. I love to collect and try the different strains. And I enjoy smoking and really just enjoying and feeling the affects.

I don't know, am I loser for having this attitude?

  • Can my mom throw out my prescriptions?

I just went to the doctor today for a physical and he ended up prescribing me Prozac. I was not expecting to be prescribed anything, nor did I want to, but the doctor believed that I have depression and it would help. So I ended up just picking up the prescription.

I really don't have any intention of taking the pills. I smoke weed and it helps with my anxiety. I'm 20 years old and still live at home since I'm going to school full time.

My mom has voiced her opinion before regarding me taking anti depressants. She is super against it and said she doesn't want me taking them.

Like I said, I really don't want to take them either. I don't like the idea that doctors prescribe this crap so often.

But my worry is that my mom will find the pills, get super pissed at me, and flush them. Even though I don't want to take them, they're still mine.

She can't legally throw out my prescriptions, can she? I know I still live at home, but I am an adult and they were given to me legally by a doctor.

  • Going on two road trips this year. Putting too many miles on my Celica?

I have a 2003 Toyota Celica GTS. It currently has about 121,000 miles on it.

I plan on taking it on two road trips this year.

In a couple weeks to Northern California (I live in SoCal). This road trip will be 1,240 miles.

And I'm going to Utah in November. This one will be about 1,380 miles.

Is this just too much for this type of car with already so many miles?

This doesn't count the miles I do in my ever day life. I average about 230 miles every week.

I need this baby to get me through all my college, another 4 years! D:

I plan on getting an oil change and checking all fluids before each trip.

  • Is it rude to ask someone what their GPA (college) is?

I've been talking on Facebook with a former classmate who is going into the same program as I am hoeing to go into (nursing(BSN)). We were both at the same community college transferring in so I've been asking him some information.

Anyways, my GPA is pretty low so I wanted to ask him what is GPA with just to get some real life comparison instead of reading statistics and averages.

I know some people get super offended when asked about their GPA so now I feel really guilty.

I wasn't trying to be rude, I asked for educational/informative purposes only.

I can understand if someone was offended, but if someone asked me I wouldn't get all mad at them. No reason to get upset about it.

  • How long does it typically take for car insurance to go down as a 'good driver'?

How long does it typically take for car insurance to go down? And by how much should I expect it to go down?

I'm a 20 year old male, college student (good student discount, woohoo) and I have one minor accident and one ticket on my record.

Because of this my premium is quite high, $133/month for full coverage with Geico.

I haven't had any tickets/accidents (on my record) since April 2011, so I'm trying to keep that up.

Otherwise I'm a pretty safe driver just waiting for my rates to drop someday :)

  • Can someone help me understand the purpose of baby baptisms?

I'm not one to attack someone else's beliefs, but infant baptism don't really make any sense to me. I'm 20 years old and my baby brother is getting baptized this weekend. Pretty much the whole family came into to town for it.

I know, 20 years is a huge age difference for siblings haha, but this is my dad's and step-mom's baby, haha.

Anyways, from the way I see it, baptism at this stage of life is more of a symbolic ceremony than anything. The baby cannot understand or comprehend what is happening. And the "holy water" doesn't do anything magical or anything.

I understand the concept of baptism I guess, the notion of the cleansing of sins. But it doesn't work obviously. I was baptized as a baby, now I'm 20 years old and I never go to church, don't affiliate with any certain religion, and I smoke weed regularly (which to some is a "sin"). So no, baptism doesn't set you up for a sin-free life or anything, haha.

  • Which profession receives more respect: Registered Nurse or Lawyer?

Which profession to you think receives more respect. Which profession do you think deserves more respect? Yes, both are professions.

Do you think if one is equally interested in becoming an attorney and RN, and I choose RN, do you consider that taking the "easy way out"?

I want to enjoy my career, but I also don't want to be looked down upon by family, friends, and society.

I wanted to go to law school until recently, as I've been doing more research on becoming an RN. Besides law school just being expensive and long in general, becoming an RN seems like a really good fit for me. I would prefer to work in an environment where my job is to help people, not in a monetary or legal sense, but in a medical and health environment. I also find the fast paced environment, independence, and team work to be attractive attributes of the career.

Anyways, that's that. Just looking for opinions haha.

  • How bad is the job market for Registered Nurses? Nursing school admission GPA.?

I'm a 20 year old student at community college. I completed all my general education over the last two years and was on track to transfer to the state university in Fall 2014 and graduate in 2016 with my BA in Political Science.

However, I just completely changed my major to Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Because of this, I'll need an extra year to complete pre-req classes and won't graduate until 2017 when I'm 24 years old.

I just had a couple questions regarding my decision.

How bad is the job market for RNs with a BSN and no prior RN experience? I keep reading there's a nurse shortage, but I also see a lot contradictory information and that the shortage is a myth.

This just leaves me to wonder, what jobs ARE there? They say there are not jobs for attorneys, social science teachers, nurses, and pilots.

Of course I'm going into the field for job stability and good salary, I'd be kidding myself if I said I wasn't. But I really truly love helping people. Plus there is a lot you can do as an RN, getting an advanced degree or going into a specialty.

I also applied for an internship at my local hospital so I can get some experience and patient contact.

I'm not a stellar student, I have a 3.0 cumulative right now. I can probably get it up to a 3.3/3.4 after my prereqs if I get As in the majority of them.

Do I not have a very good chance of getting into nursing school with a 3.3?

Also, is the job market going to really be that bad for RNs where I should be deterred from it and look into different fields?

Basically, from my understanding, EVERY field is over saturated. Unless I wanted to go into factory work or whatever, which I'm not going to do haha.

  • YouTube displaying support for LGBT pride. DOMA/Prop 8?

If you go to YouTube today, you'll notice that they put a rainbow heart in support of the SCOTUS rulings this week on DOMA and Prop 8.

What are your opinions? Should YouTube openly support this? Or is this over the line for a company?

  • Why is it so difficult to cash savings bonds? Where can I go to do this?

I have about $900 in savings bonds that I need to redeem. My credit union cannot cash them, so they referred me to Wells Fargo. I went there and they told me they can only cash about half of them, otherwise I'd have to open an account. And I can't go to multiple locations because my SSN is linked to it. I called BoA and they said they can only cash 3.

Why is it so difficult to do this? Will I have to go to like five different banks to redeem all of it?

I really like my CU and I'm not about to leave it for an account at WF or BoA.

  • Taking elective classes in college unrelated to your major?

I'm going to be starting my fourth semester at community college this fall. My major is psychology. Anyways, I will only need to take a few classes each semester, so I was thinking of taking Intro to the Dramatic Arts in the fall semester. It's something I've always wanted to learn more about, and also acting. I've always been too shy and insecure to take any drama classes in high school, etc.

But my friends/family are berating me because it's irrelevant to my major and career and I could be doing better stuff with my time.

Should I not take the class? I'm still young, and in college and I was just thinking, might as well do it.

  • Why am I gaining fat again? What am I doing wrong with my diet/exercise?

    I'm 20 years old, 5'6" weight around 145 pounds.

I used to weigh 175 fall 2011. Lost weight, ended up with an eating disorder type thing. Under 1,000 calories a day, 5 days a week. Then binging on the weekends.

I quit doing this about 1-2 months ago. I've noticed recently that I've put on some weight. But it's getting bad. My face is a lot fuller and my love handles are getting fuller again too.

I go to the gym 4 days a week (1 hour elliptical one day, 40 min and weights one day, and 30 min cardio and weights the other 2 days). And I also play tennis or hike those other three days.

So I'm active, I don't sit all day.

I've been eating between an average of 1800-2800 calories a day. I don't think this is a crazy amount.

I allow myself treats like every day, but I make sure I stay within my calorie range. I think this is better than depriving and binging. I hate feeling super hungry and I hate feeling full because of overeating. I don't eat mindlessly and stuff.

A normal day of food for me on a work day is like cereal, nature valley bar, greek yogurt, fruit, healthy choice steamer or sandwich, some type of chips or chex mix (200 calories) and if I'm hungry at the end of the day I'll have like a cracker pack or another granola bar (190 calories). So my calorie intake for breakfast through late afternoon is like 1200 calories. Then dinner is usually 300-500, then a dessert and/or snack, so like a daily total of 2300 calories. If I go out for dinner and eat bad (like on of those 1000 calorie entrees), then I make concessions with my other meals. Like eliminate a couple snacks or deserts or whatever. I don't see what's wrong with my eating. It's normal to me. It's what my friends do basically and they're all thinner than me.

So like 2500 calories plus exercise, how the hell am I getting fat?

What am I doing wrong? Am I going to end up back at 180 again if I keep this up? :(

  • Should I drop out of college? Only have a 3.0 and want too/need to go to grad school.?

I'm 20 years old, going into my fourth semester of community college this fall.

My "first" semester I did terrible and ended up getting a B and a C and withdrawing from all my other classes. So I don't really count that semester. I count the spring semester as my first.

Anyways, my current gpa is 3.0

By the time I graduate with my BA in PolySci the highest it could realistically be is a 3.3-3.4, that's assuming I don't get anything lower than like a 3.5-3.7 for the last three years of school.

Basically, all my career interests require graduate school. I'm mainly considering law school, getting my teaching credential, or doing an accelerated nursing program to get my BSN and become an RN.

Should I just drop out? I honestly don't think I'll be a competitive candidate for any of those programs. Isn't a 3.3 in PolySci a complete joke and pathetic? I'm pretty embarrassed, honestly.

Do you think it's even worth investing the next three years and thousands of dollars into something that's not going to get me anywhere?
