  • Fiber Optics powering my home LAN?

    Hello everyone! Here's my setup:

I have a DSL modem from frontier in my home office. That's where its installed, I refuse to move it. across the house, I have a server room. Nothing too fancy. It was part of a remodel at the house, it was previously a joint bathroom and mini bedroom. Only issue here is that there is no cabling run to this room other than electric. Its not worth running phone lines and such to it so we didnt have it done... So, here's what i'm thinking. The server room hosts the Plex server (along with others), all media is at maximum resolution (4K Movies, RAW images, etc, etc). For the longest time, I simply had a range extender on the wall nearest to that of the router/modem combo. This range extender did its job well: it extended the range of my Wi-Fi. The range extender also had a gigabit ethernet port on the bottom of it. I ran this ethernet cable to my 48 port, gigabit switch and done - everything worked for the most part - except the plex server. it just couldnt keep up... it would drop my resolution or buffer constantly. I just got word today that Metronet Fiber will be coming to my house soon and words cannot explain how excited I am for it to be here. 1GB/s up and down! The Representative and tech i met with today said that they will replace all phone lines in my home, not install any new ones, which is a bummer for my server room.

  • Windows 10 Enterprise questions?

Hello! I am working for a medium sized, corporate company. We are in the process of upgrading all of our computers to Windows 10 Enterprise. All computers here currently run Windows 7 either Pro or Enterprise.

When installing Windows 10, there is a ton of extra junk included - such as WiFi Sense, Candy Crush, xbox one stuff, etc. Being in a corporate environment here, we cannot have this junk on our machines. The update to 10 is mandatory. I am looking for a way to run either a powershell/CMD command that will scrape it all off OR using Registry & Group policy to either remove it or restrict users from accessing it.

    Thanks!

  • Multiple microphones input to one audio input jack? Splitter?

I have a nikon D3200. Its a nice and easy to use camera but I'm not a huge fan of the tools and such that can be used with it. I like the idea of having an audio input on the camera but I am not sure what its limits are. So, I want to have 2 microphones plugged in and both recording what I am filming (More depth to the sound and more options as to what I can record) I want to conduct interviews with this camera. I have two handheld Audio Technica microphones that have a 3.5mm jack that plug into my camera. I would really prefer to be able to use both at the same time and have both plugged into the cameras single audio input jack. How would i go about doing this? Use a splitter and just plug the mics into the ports or what? I don't have many options as to what I can buy. I will be in another country (specifically Haiti) and electricity and all that isn't an option. Thanks!

  • Websites not loading on ethernet, but load on wifi.?

Here's my setup. Comcast Business Modem - we have a 1GB/s download speed and 950MB/s upload speed at my location (its a custom tier that we setup with Comcast). We are running a very specific fiber network here in my building. The modem/router combo sits in my office. Connected to it are 3 switches (each switch has either 12, 18, or 26 10GB/s ports on it and each port on every switch either connects to yet another switch or an Access Point. The fourth port in my office is connected to an older printer that doesn't support wireless tech (Yeah, its old). I deal with large files here and so I like to use ethernet to handle them. Its a lot faster than our old wireless N+ setup and it's a priority connection when im wired directly into the modem. I tend to use the ethernet port that the printer uses because we use that stupid printer once a week and there is no point in keeping it connected all of the time. Recently here, ive been unable to access sites while connected via ethernet. I pop the cable in and turn off wifi on my Mac and all sites go dead. All sites except Google and the Modem Config Page 10.1.10.x. I can search in google but the second I click on the page i was searching for it says it is unable to locate or access the server. If I disconnect the ethernet cable and refresh the page it loads instantly. No lack of server connection at all on WiFi. Like I mentioned above, its not like our ethernet ports are slow and they are absolutely not overloaded. Thanks!

  • T-Mobie Binge On?

I am thinking about switching from Verizon to T-Mobile... Their new Binge On feature has sure got my attention! I absolutely love the thought of being able to watch unlimited media from certain sites (Netflix in specific) without it using your data. I do have a few questions about it however:

    1)

If I am using my phone as a WiFi hotspot, would I be able to watch Netflix on my computer?

    2)

Would watching Netflix on my laptop count against my actual data or would it fall under Binge On?

    3)

Any idea if YouTube will ever be part of the Binge On family?

  • Contacting the City About Getting Cable or Fiber Installed on my Road?

I live out in the country in northwest Indiana. Corn fields, the occasional tree line, and dusty pollen filled air. Currently, we are severely limited in terms of utilities. However, implementing them would be extremely easy to do. We are limited to Frontier DSL. Absolute trash. Frontier promises speeds of up to 1 megabit per second. Not enough for a family of 5. Each person in our household has a phone, tablet, laptop, and a desktop. The younger kids have iPods instead of desktops. Anyway, you get the idea. Lots of devices requesting instagram, snapchat, etc, etc. Even though Frontier promises that we will have 1 megabit per second, we rarely get 1/4th of that. Everyone who lives around me, including myself, are fed-up with DSL.

Our road is shaped like a capital L. All of the roads around us have access to either Comcast Cable or Metronet Fiber. Neither of which is even available on our road. Just Frontier. From my house, I can see a little box on the side of the road that has Comcast in big letters. Our area is shaped like a big square. the top and right sides of the square have Comcast. The bottom and left are Frontier. All that I'm trying to say here is that we are surrounded by cable and fiber and our road is the rut of the litter. We aren't treated fairly (thats how most internet companies work, right...), but we want Frontier out of the picture. We want Comcast or Metronet Fiber. How could I get the city involved in getting us setup with comcast or metronet?

  • Do I need a network camera or other type of camera for this?

At my church, we have a baptismal just behind the stage. Its not a large church (About 150 people weekly), however, when there is a baptism, it is rather hard to see the person. At a meeting tonight we discussed many things. One of which was how to put the baptisms up on the projection screens through a live feed. They had attempted to do this once before and found a latency in the video and the actual thing. I understand that a very slight and possibly unnoticeable latency in video is to be expected, however their old camera and wireless setup at the time was entirely G. The network has now been upgraded to N/N+ and the offices and meeting rooms are AC. Our auditorium is currently in the process of the switch to AC but thats a side note. Anyway, we would like to use some sort of camera to record the baptism, broadcast it over the Wi-Fi to our media computers where it can be put on the projection screens and TVs. Would we need a network camera? We mentioned network cameras, security cameras, and even a simple baby camera was brought up. I like the idea of a network camera best, but we need it to look professional to have it on the big screens. Any ideas? Cameras that would be best? Software for doing something like this? Our budget for this thing isn't huge. No numbers were mentioned, but anything under $120 in total sounds good. Thanks!

  • Can I use Google Glass without a phone?

Does glass require you to have a phone with it all the time? Can I replace my phone with it? If I do "Tether" it to my phone, how much data will this thing use? What if I leave my phone at home on runs, but wear Glass, will it still function without trouble (Minus notifications and such). Is there a glass with its own data plan? Can glass play music like my phone would? Thanks!

  • Nokia lumia 1020 for Verizon ever planned? Windows Phone Alternatives?

I love the thought of having a 40 Megapixel camera on my phone! How cool would it be to be able to take such great pictures from your phone! My current phone has a 5MP camera and I thought it was pretty good for a phone camera! Only negative, in my opinion, about the 1020 is its not on Verizon! Anyone know if they ever plan to make it available on VZ? What about other windows phones with amazing cameras (35+ MP) coming out this year for Verizon? Thanks!!!!

  • Is net neutrality placing torrent traffic on the same level as Netflix and Facebook?

I have read plenty on net neutrality, good and bad. One thing that stood out to me was the idea that all web traffic is treated equal. Does this mean that ISPs wont throttle anymore? I experienced my internet getting throttled after downloading a 100% legal Linux torrent FROM THE UBUNTU SITE! Called and stated my case, was hung up on and sent a $140 for customer service charges... Still throttled today and it was almost 2 years ago... Would net neutrality speed it back up to what it was? Treat legal torrents the same as facebook traffic? How would net neutrality treat illegal torrent downloads? thanks!

  • Bought Minecraft and a few other games on Xbox 360, will I have to buy them again if I buy an Xbox One?

I Love my Xbox 360, don't get me wrong, but most games today are made for the latest and greatest. To keep up, im buying an Xbox One. I don't want to hear about the positives of PlayStation, I do not care what you say about it. I'm buying an Xbox One. I got a ps3, didn't work, took it back, got another, it didn't work either, took it back, got a refund and bought an Xbox 360. Worked fine since I got it. Back to my original question: I got minecraft and a few other games on my 360 (Bought the games, at the time, Microsoft Points), If I get a One, will I have to buy them again? they aren't discs, I downloaded them after buying them from the 360. Thank you!!!

  • WiFi --> Ethernet Port?

My xbox wifi keeps dropping off, its only wifi too. If I run a 200' cable from my router to xbox, it runs fine and is lag free. a friend from work brought over his xbox and had the same problem on my wifi. He bought this device that plugs into the wall, takes in wifi signal, and outputs an ethernet connection. So he plugs his xbox into the ethernet port and it runs fine! No drops! He told me what the device is called, but I forgot.

Wifi --> Unknown Device > Ethernet port > Xbox.

    THANKS!

  • Looking for a High-Security Web Server?!?!?

My dad called me today with some great news from work! His company is getting a new website! I have no idea how but I guess the site is all setup. He asked me to help him look for a server to buy at his workplace. I have no idea what kind of server we are looking at, but he gave me some specs that they NEED to have on this server. This server needs to host an "In browser application", needs to be secure (Secure as a banks server as it will hold very personal information!), needs to be RAID based, needs a large amount of hard drive slots (terabytes upon terabytes of data), Lots of ram (around 120 average users on at a time all using this web app), and we need it under $10,000 preferably. Would we need a web server or dedicated server? It will be a site people go to and type in their information to get to the web app.

    Email sent to my dad:

    Web Server for EBS.

Please advise on a server to run the self-service portion of EBS Timesheet.

I am not looking for the basic system requirement but rather what it would take to run with and employee base of 100-150 users. We want to make it available outside our domain. We have concerns with security but setting it up on a single machine should provide us the security we are after.

    Processor model(s) and speed

    Operating System

    Memory Requirements:

    Hard drive specs

    Network

    Required applications installed on server/computer

Ran out of characters! Ill update!!!!!!!

  • New Computer soon, will wifi passwords move with my Microsoft account?

Getting a new computer soon (Anyone looking for a computer, windows 8 sucks without a touchscreen!) Not sure if im getting a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro or Lenovo IdeaCentre Horizon. That doesnt matter right now, I came for another reason. I have since boxed up all my other laptops and moved to windows 8. I have a pretty immense wifi password database built up, I have at least 800 (I have NO idea how to check how many for sure, just a guess). I do NOT want to ask for these passwords again, especially works wifi password. Is switching computers the same general aspect as android? On my Android tablet, if I type in a wifi password, it goes to my phone so I only have to type it once. It works on my google account, so does microsoft work the same for computer to computer? I just want everything (Like wifi passwords) to sync to my new computer when I login. Is there any software that does this for me if microsoft doesnt? Can I do it manually by copying a file where the passwords are kept? thanks!

  • Netflix Online Help?!?!?

My mom called me and told me she signed up for netflix... for $12/month. She gave me the username and password and told me to enjoy. We got to talking and while we were, i tried to login. It failed on all my laptops (Windows 8 netflix app, and yes its up to date), my tablet, my phone, and my ipod touch (3rd Generation -- I hate it). I want to watch online, not DVDs. When i went to the netflix website from my computer, it came up with this huge list of DVDs I could add to my list to have sent to my parents house. The password worked just fine on the netflix website, just not on the apps. How do I watch it online? Is there a way my mom just signed up for DVD only? Is online streaming free if I (My parents) already got "DVD only"? Thanks!

    Server at home?

Any way that I could get a server at my house were each computer had a logon screen like the included picture?

Were I work we have a username and password that we can use on any of their computers and all your files are kept on their server in my H: Drive so any computer I login on has all my files just like i left them on another computer (its like a virtual flashdrive, with 20TB per person). I want something like this at my house. I have 34 Computers and believe me, it is a total pain to transfer over the network. Want my files at home to be like my H: Drive.

So lets say I have a database on Computer 1 (We'll call it C1). Just so happens this Database is almost 300 GB. I dont have a flash drive big enough to put it on, and my current network couldnt transfer that with an ethernet cable in 2 days. If this file was at work, I could put this file on my H: Drive within a few seconds.

I think my school had a system like this, we had I: Drives and if we worked on a word document, but didnt quite finish, I could save this to my I: Drive and when I came back the next day and logged in on another computer with my username and password, my files were right where I left them on the I: Drive and I could continue working on them.

How would i do this? What kind of server would i need? How much would I spend?
