I'm an American Mormon from San Jose, California, but I'll just as readily stand up for any religion that's being bashed. I love computers, kayaking, scuba diving, and especially badminton!

  • How can I reduce a smart charger's amperage from 0.9A to 0.5A?

I stupidly bought a smart charger and a new battery for my airsoft pistol's battery after ruining the first battery, but only paid attention to the voltage. Turns out the amperage is also important. I've got a 500mah battery, but the charger only goes down to 0.9A. Will the charger wear out the battery too quickly? If so, is there some way I can lower the amperage without risking the overcharging of my battery?

  • What does the NHTSA do with tested vehicles?

Do they return the vehicle to the manufacturer? If so, what does the manufacturer do with it? Would it be possible to buy one of the less-totaled cars and repair it?

  • How can we gauge the effectiveness of the UN?

I'm currently under the impression (mistaken as it might be) that with 193 member states and five nations with veto power the UN is unable to agree on much of anything and can't get much done. But I like to work with facts. How can I find a list of measures or proposals brought before the UN and what subsequent action or inaction was taken with them?

  • What is a good wireless gaming mouse?

I currently use a Logitech M525 (wireless, but not gaming) since I play games in an HTPC setting, and although it usually works flawlessly, it tends to stop responding for several seconds at a time in Minecraft and any game that uses the Source engine. I'm not looking for anything too complicated, just something that's wireless and responds well regardless of the application.

  • Why is New Super Mario Bros U breaking my Wii U?

I just bought my brother a used copy of New Super Mario Bros U for his birthday. The disk appears to be in flawless condition with no scratches or fingerprints. Of course when he tries to play the game, it requires an update. After the update and a first attempt to play the game, everything stops working. No other games will play at all until the update is deleted. As for Mario Bros U itself, it's extremely buggy, with read errors happening randomly. They usually happen before he can even start a level, but always before he gets to a save spot.

It's impossible to burn pirated copies onto new discs because Nintendo uses a proprietary format, right? So what is the problem with the game? Is it the disc, the program, or the update?

  • Are there any ambient light systems that don't require a computer?

Systems like Adalight and DIY projects all seem to require a computer doing the processing on the four quadrants of the screen. Although a computer is hooked up to my TV, I'd prefer to watch movies with my blu-ray player. I'd also rather not have my computer processing 1080p video while I'm playing games on it. Are there any systems that can serve as an LED controller without requiring full PC to process the video signal? I don't mind using it in combination with Arduino.

  • How to pick a mouse pad?

I game from my couch these days, but soft surfaces aren't very ideal for mice. I currently use an old hard-page photo, but it's no mouse pad. Are there any large mouse pads stiff enough to place on the couch next to me? Better yet, is there a way to raise the surface ~ 3 inches so my wrist doesn't hurt after a couple hours without something so unsightly as a phone book?

  • What steps do news sources take to fix libel or misinformation?

I was recently reading about a teen that was falsely accused of being connected to the Boston Marathon Bombings and how his picture was placed on the front page of a newspaper that shall not be named. The boy is now in fear for his life. In such a serious case, is the newspaper required to post a redaction on the front page since that is where the original article was, or can it be squeezed into one of the middle pages between a couple of ads? Is there often a difference between what the law requires and what the ethics of journalism dictate?

  • How can you tell what sugar is good sugar?

On a food's nutrition info it always lists sugar if the food has any, but it varies wildly one product to another. For example, an apple has ~13 grams of sugar whereas a single serving of Fruity Pebbles only has 12, but I'm pretty sure the apple is healthier. If I'm trying to avoid unnecessary sugar intake, how can I decide if a food's amount of sugar is good or unacceptable? I'm asking because my wife is worried she's developing diabetes.

  • Will Blu-rays support The Hobbit's 48fps?

There isn't a theater within 800 miles that will be playing it at 48fps, but my TV supports 120Hz. Does Blu-ray support HFR? Is there any way I'll be able to see it properly at home?

  • How can I turn on my TV using my computer?

A few months ago my wife and I purchased an LG TV that uses SimpLink, and I've been very happy that it turns on by itself whenever we turn on the LG Blu-ray player (plugged into HDMI 2). However, it fails to recognize when our HTPC turns on (plugged into HDMI 1 using a Radeon HD 7850). How can I get my computer to send an on-signal to the TV like the Blu-ray player does?

  • How can I check if two devices are interfering with each other?

I just recently set up my new HTPC, so of course wireless things like a keyboard, mouse, and Xbox 360 controller were purchased. It was only when playing Portal 2 in split-screen mode with my wife a couple nights ago that we realized the keyboard was responding intermittently. After some research I found that not only is our WiFi using the 2.4 Ghz band, but so were our mouse and keyboard (both from Logitech and made to use the same "unifying" receiver), and the Xbox 360 controller. I briefly experienced the same problem when playing another game with the controller turned off, but the problem seemed to be fixed by having the keyboard and mouse use two separate receivers.

My wife thought the problem was only with the one level we were playing on, and hence a software glitch, but I wasn't sold. Is there some way for me to check if two devices are really interfering with each other or if it's just a glitch in the keyboard's drivers?

  • Is reading hard-coded into our brains?

You can never forget how to ride a bike, even though it may be a few years in between rides, but is reading the same way? If a person went for five or more years without reading a single word, could he forget how to do it? It's a rather difficult thing to test since our society constantly bombards us with words in one form or another.

  • Where can I find a proper review of the Tesla Model S?

All the reviews I've found so far have been from people who have only had an 10 minutes to an hour of driving the Model S. As such, all of them speak of the car's performance and beauty, but not a single one can speak for its endurance. Are there any reviews out there from people who own the car or have had it for more than one charge?

  • How do we judge the age of the earth?

Was the earth "born" when the first two asteroids collided and stuck together? Was it when earth's core began generating significant heat? I've heard age is calculated based on the radiometric age of rocks, but if radioactive materials are too dense to be formed by earth naturally, isn't this more a measure of the age of an asteroid rather than the planet it eventually became?

  • How can I learn the qualifications of a journalist?

Lately in my history class we've been required to read essays commenting on events unfolding in the Middle East. These essays are written by professors, government advisors, worked in the field, etc. However, speaking mostly of editorials, it's rare to find a journalist in any field who can boast qualifications other than just being a journalist. How can a person judge if a journalist knows what they are talking about versus a journalist who has made his living writing rash remarks about current events without getting the whole story?

  • How can I warm my engine block without access to an electrical outlet?

I recently began college in a very cold town. Since I'm living in an apartment, there's no nearby electrical outlet and thus a normal block heater isn't feasible. What other options do I have for warming up my engine?

  • Is it legal to decompile code?

I recently read that it is legal to decompile for purposes like interoperability and learning the algorithms used. What does this mean? For interoperability, it seems to suggest that it would be legal to decompile the code so that a PS3 game could be run on a non-PS3 system, such as a PC. For the part about algorithms, what defines an algorithm? Aren't algorithms patented all the time? Wouldn't decompiling patented or copyrighted methods be illegal? I also read about Sega vs. Accolade, but that seemed a very narrow case study. I'm hoping for a rule of thumb or something like that.

  • How can I prevent Windows from automatically killing a program?

I have a lot of old games I like to keep playing on my Windows 7 Pro x64 computer. Granted not all games are meant to run on Windows 7, but on a few of them it says the game has stopped responding and kills it when I'm pretty sure the game was working just fine. Is there any way for me to disable the automatic killing of programs in Windows 7?
