What is the definition of atheism?
I must admit I am getting a little sick of a lot of questions about this topic, so I'd like to clear this up. What exactly do people think atheism is?
Is atheism not believing in god(s) (deities, etc) OR is it believing that there is no god(s)?
Because it seems to me these are two very different things.
I can decide not to believe in any gods because I don't have evidence for it. But I don't have evidence that there isn't a god either.
Is that agnostic? Because people have told me that means you are undecided about a religion. But I'm completely decided to have no religion. I've decided there is no proof either way and I'll just go on living. I could go and create my own god if I wanted to, but for myself personally it would be a waste of time.
Thanks everyone. And please no arguing over the whole religion issue, I just want answers on the definition of atheism.

1 AnswerLanguages1 decade agoParents care too much about grades?
I understand that grades are very important, but this is to a limit! My dad is very laid back and relaxed, and I'm fine with him. But my mom is always pushing me in school. Lately I've realized that most of the reason I've been such a perfectionist and stressed in school is because of her. I know I'm biased, but I'm not making this up.
I don't mean to brag, but I'm an A+ student at a Magnet school. For example, last year none of my averages for my classes were below a 98. As an estimate, at my school I'm probably in the top fifteen people in academic performance. But she won't get off my back!
There's things a lot more important in life than the grades that you get. If I get anything below a hundred than she's unhappy with me - if I get below a 95 on a test, quiz, or project, she gets mad at me. I'm in eight grade and am in Algebra II, integrated physics and chemistry, and have taken Spanish II, French II, and German I. Is that enough for you guys?! Honestly, she's driving me crazy! I love my classes, but sometimes it gets to be too much. I watch no TV, play on the computer maybe half an hour per day... Since I read in all my free time, because it's something I love doing, she complains that I'm not reading the right kinds of books - like silly fantasy books instead of good classics! When I've actually read a lot of classics (Gone with the Wind, Pride and Prejudice, The Stranger, Moby Dick, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Grapes of Wrath, Call of the Wild, Wuthering Heights - I could go on forever), just I like reading other books (Eragon, Harry Potter, Tamora Pierce, Golden Compass, Twilight series), for fun as well.
And I'm not one of those people who are 'nerds' either. I don't talk a lot, but I like hanging out with friends and having fun with other people. I do dance, art club, and tennis - I love art!
Sorry for the long rant, but I'm glad I got it all out of my system. I think the problem is perspective - anyone else would say I'm like the perfect child, which of course is far from true. And I realize I've achieved a lot but there is so much more I can achieve. But I try so much and nothing ever seems to be enough. It would be nice to be appreciated a little sometimes. If I worked so hard that I could skip all of highschool - which is maybe possible, since I'm pretty good at learning on my own - I bet you anything she still wouldn't be satisfied.
What do I do? I've been putting up with this my whole life. A lot of thanks for any help.

18 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoMy parents don't seem to agree with what I want to do as a career in the future?
I want to work with animals or at least work with the environment - that's the main thing. The problem is that my parents are scientists, and while I like science, I would not want to do the kind of science they do - doing experiments in a laboratory in microbiology. I want to study nature live interacting with it, not closed inside a room. But when they asked me about it, and I told them I wanted to work with the animals or the environment, like as a zookeeper, parkranger, etc. - they just laugh it off. I believe that they think I haven't really thought about it, but I have - I would like to study animals and nature in their natural environment. Also, it seems they disapprove of it because it doesn't require a huge education - but I don't need a big career that pays a lot with a high placement to be happy. Also, if I want to study the environment, what general courses should I take? Thanks for any help, it will be greatly appreciated.

3 AnswersOther - Careers & Employment1 decade agoHow do you find real roots of polynomial equations?
Each polynomial equation P(x)=0 has at least one real root. Approximate it to the nearest tenth. Do not use Interpolation.
P(x) = x^3-16
P(x) = x^3-x^2-x-3
P(x) = x^3-3x-1
P(x) = x^4-3x^3+5
Mainly, I just don't get how to find the roots. Please, I need an explanation of how to solve this. Thank you.

14 AnswersHomework Help1 decade agoWhy do you need wear a bra?
I've researched a bit on this, and the more I find about it, the more ridiculous bras seem. Basically, people that say you should wear a bra, say that it's because it's for support. Mainly, for movement. Now, I get this for sports, but otherwise...
Also, they say that your breasts sag. Actually, some studies suggest that it's the opposite - the breasts don't hold themselves up, so when you take off the bra, they sag more. But what I don't get, is that people lived for hundreds of years without bras. Tribes live without tops. In addition, they do more movement then we do - except for maybe something extreme, like gymnastics.
So basically, it is because of how people have been brought up to view breasts. They see them as indecent, so you have to wear bras. The media of course promotes this, because of the huge bra industry.
Even some studies show that bras are bad for your help.
So the only reason that I actually wear a bra, because it's much more comfortable not wearing one, is because everyone else does. I've realized the only reason I'm doing it is because everyone else would stare at me and make fun of me.
Isn't it kind of silly?
Thanks for any of your help and opinions.
I'd really like to clear up the health issue around bras. I know that if they're too tight they restrict flow, or other badly made can cause health problems.
BUT DO YOU REALLY NEED A BRA?
(for health, not societal rules)
8 AnswersWomen's Health1 decade agoHow do I live with the horrors of civilization?
There are so many horrible things about human society. The more I learn, the more it makes me sick. It gets to the point that I almost think about running away and living in the nature, away from it all, but of course that doesn't happen. And I look around and I see everyone smiling and laughing. Do they block it out, or just not care as much? I try to think about something else, but everytime it comes back to haunt me.
The killing all over the world. The waste. People destroying the environment. And themselves. The hate and the ignorance. And people seeming that they just don't care.
How do people deal with this?

1 AnswerHomework Help1 decade agoHow do I balance my life to be happy?
People say that I have a lot of school work because I go to an advanced school, but the main problem is that I put it off, reading or staying on the computer... Then I stay up late and feel horribly guilty. I really enjoy the projects and ideas we work on but I can't seem to balance it to get free time to do what I want to do; sometimes I eat to feel better, and I end up feeling worse. Sometimes I feel like: what's the point of school and the life we life? I mean, so many of the things we do are really pointless, and I dream about a different, brave me, running away, somewhere into the country; but that's a different world, and I am brought back to reality, where I know it's never going to happen. I feel that so many things I waste my time on, that I'll never use, and all I really want is to live somewhere outside, maybe just a simple job to be happy. It's kind of a big, mixed up problem, and any ideas would help, thank you.
