  • Places to visit from Dartford?

My cousin wants to go to the Isle of Wight primarily for its beauty and old world feel. Trouble is from what I can see, it would take us 3.5 hours at least to get there so we wouldn’t be there before 11.30am on the first day and would need to leave around 5pm on the next. I’m not sure if this is worthwhile considering the cost of the journey and the B&B for the night.

Are there other equally nice places that we could get to quicker from Dartford?

  • Can I get Toshiba Regza to work without an aerial?

I've just bought a Toshiba Regza & it keeps saying 'no broadcast signal'. From the manual it looks like I'm supposed to plug the aerial into the TV for it to auto tune. So far I've had a CRT and used it with Sky+. Is it not possible for me to use the Toshiba in the same way? I don't think I even have an aerial. Do I need to buy one? My neighbour has an aerial I think - can I use hers temporarily or will I need to buy one to make the damn TV work? If so, what am I supposed to buy? I'm not techie at all.

  • Types of house construction in the UK.?

We’re thinking of buying a house and the estate agent we saw showed us pictures of some houses that he said are ex-council. He said their construction is iron frame with cladding (I think) and not all lenders will offer mortgages to buy them. We’re not interested in that sort of property but how do we tell what kind of construction they have from looking at them? Everything in our area seems to look the same. And if we want to ask the owner, what are the terms we need to know? The estate agent spoke very fast and we weren’t able to understand the technical terms he used.

Would really appreciate some insight into the different types of residential property construction in the UK.

  • Holiday spot between London and York?

Friends of mine live in York and I live in London. We're planning a holiday together but want to keep it as cheap as possible. I suggested Bath but travel is too expensive for them and travelling up North near them is too expensive for me. Any suggestions for a nice place to visit (3 days) that's midway between us. Ideally, a pretty place with some historic associations and places to see.

  • Growing lettuce?

I chucked a packet of lettuce seeds into a medium sized pot with soil last Sunday and now I’ve got lots of tiny little leaves. I didn’t expect it to grow so didn’t sow it properly. What should I do with it now? Should I pull some out and plant them in different pots? How do I do that? I guess there are too many seedlings there to grow in one small pot. I think it’s the kind of lettuce that doesn’t have a heart.

  • If I have given notice to leave the flat before the contract finishes can I stay till the contract finishes?

Sorry for the repost but wanted to add some details. Everyone told me that if I leave my flat before the contract finishes, the landlord can keep the rent for the entire period. Fair enough, if that is the law.

I have given written notice that I will vacate the flat 19 days before the contract finishes. Can I now say that I will not vacate early? If I have to pay for it I may as well keep it. Though the flat will be empty as we will move as planned but I don't want the landlord to earn double by renting it to someone else - and he will do it because these flats go like hotcakes.

  • Will I get the extra rent back if I leave before the contract finishes?

I signed a 1 year contract for a rented apartment that is due to finish on 14th May. However, we are moving out 19 days early and have provided a month's notice about this to the owner. The flat has been advertised as available from the date we are leaving and many people have already come to see it. We have already paid the entire month's rent.

The landlord is now hinting that because we are vacating the property before the contract is finished, he will not refund the 19 days worth of extra rent we have paid. Can he legally do that? Is there anything we can do to get our money back. It's not fair that he should get paid for those days from us as well as the new tenant!

  • Is Bexleyheath a nice place to live?

I am moving to Bexleyheath - initially renting but eventually thinking of buying. I don't know the area at all - it looked nice on a brief visit but friends have been telling me it's not nice. The properties seem to be good value but if it's not a nice area - I'm confused. Feedback from anyone who lives there will be nice.

  • What areas are a 15 minute bus trip from Bexleyheath Broadway?

My husband has got a job on Bexleyheath Broadway so we need to move near there. I work in central London so we need a place that is not more than 15-20 min bus ride away from Bexleyheath Broadway and which also has trains into London.

We've identified Bexleyheath itself and Bexley but any other locations would be great since we're looking for a 6 month let and these aren't commonly available. It needs to be a reasonably nice and safe area as well.

    Thanks for all your help.

  • Is it ok to wear orthotics to the gym?

I have extremely flat feet and have been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. My podiatrist has given me custom orthotics (insoles) and these have relieved my pain immensely. I can now walk without pain & want to join a gym to lose weight. My question is, is it ok to do high impact exercises with orthotics in? I don't want to damage my feet further. What exercises can I do and which should I avoid, if any?

I know I should ask my podiatrist but my next appointment is weeks away and it would be nice to start working out soon.

  • Can you recommend some inexpensive but good restaurants in Brussels and Amsterdam?

I will be visiting Brussels and Amsterdam soon and would like to get the names of some good places to eat. We're on a budget so cheaper ones would be good but we'd rather eat nice food than cheap trash! It's our first trip so we don't know the area at all so places near the typical tourist spots would be good. Also recommendations on what to eat. I'd love to try some typical Belgian and Dutch dishes.

In Amsterdam our hotel is quite central but in Brussels we will be in Upper Town, 5 miles from the airport.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Full-time job + part-time job + freelancing: tax and NI implications?

    Hi,

I have a full time job and I also freelance in two different areas. One freelancing gig is with a particular company and the other is on and off at different places. I know I have to pay tax on all three and I have registered as self employed for the on-off freelance work. I've only just landed the other freelancing contract and since it is a different type of job, I was wondering if I need to declare myself self-employed again?
