I mainly hang out in the Marriage and Divorce section, but I also answer a lot in the Religion and Spirituality section. I'm not one of those users whose kneejerk answer to every relationship question is "Dump him he's a loser" and I'm not here to make wise-cracking comments to make myself laugh. OK, sometimes I make wise-cracking comments. But that's not the *real* reason I'm here. I try to give every question a thoughtful answer. I believe in having a lot of patience with a spouse, but demanding that your spouse treat you with respect.
Should teachers be able to call creationism "superstitious nonsense"?
Chad Farnan sat in Professor James Corbett's class and recorded a lecture that included a lot of negative comments about christianity.
With that recording, he filed a lawsuit saying the teacher had created a hostile environment and had violated the establishment clause. He identified 20 anti-christian statements from the lecture.
The judge disagreed with most of the student's claims, but he decided that calling creationism "religious, superstitious nonsense" violated the student's rights.
Do you agree?

16 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoNow that it's been proven the DNA evidence was wrong about the Book of Mormon, will critics apologize?
Critics of the Book of Mormon said that if the book was true, we should find evidence of Hebrew DNA, like the Cohen Modal Haplotype in the indigenous people of South America, but since they didn't find it, that means the book must be false.
Now it turns out the exact DNA marker they suggested, the Cohen Modal Haplotype, exists in the indigenous people of Colombia, Brazil, and Bolivia.
Why do I have the feeling people will keep repeating the same garbage, even after it's been proven false?
16 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhy do Atheists and Christians both fight over Lincoln's religious beliefs?
I hear lots of Christians and Atheists both trying to claim Lincoln as one of their own. Why is it so important to them that they keep closing their ears to half of the story?
Any atheist that reads "Lincoln, the Freethinker" by Joseph Lewis and believes it, should be stripped of the title "Freethinker". The paper is shallow and one-sided. Just reading Lincoln's quotes in his paper it's obvious that Lewis is misquoting Lincoln and trying to give his statements a different meaning that Lincoln's original intention.

On the other hand, Christians that base their beliefs on tripe like William J. Johnstone's book "Abraham Lincoln, the Christian" are deluding themselves because the book is chock full of professions of faith by Lincoln, but pretends that all contrary evidence just doesn't exist.

Abraham Lincoln declared nine days of prayer, fasting, and thanksgiving. More than any president before or since.

5 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWas Abraham Lincoln correct in this assessment of the Bible?
The freedmen of Baltimore , Maryland presented President Lincoln with a gift of a Bible on September 7, 1864. In thanking them he said, “In regard to this great book, I have but to say, it is the best gift God has given to man. All the good, Savior gave to this world was communicated through this book. But for it, we could not know right from wrong. All things desirable for man's welfare, here and hereafter, are to be found portrayed in it.”

9 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoDo you agree with this quote from Abraham Lincoln?
“We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth and power ... But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.”

8 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIf the apostle John was still alive, would his 2,000-year life story be scripture?
If it turned out that the apostle John really was still alive (like is mentioned at the end of the book of John), and he had been keeping a record of his entire 2,000-year life, would you accept his record as scripture like the other books he wrote in the Bible?
John 21:21-23
21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about this man?"
22 Jesus said to him, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!"
23 So the saying spread abroad among the brothers that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?"

20 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhat exactly was finished when Christ said "It is finished."?
Another answerer proposed that Jesus was saying all works of God were closed "by ANYONE until Christ's return (Period)".
So does that mean the apostles should not have recorded the events at the day of Pentecost? (Acts chapter 2)
Should Peter not have recorded his vision about eating unclean beasts? (Acts 10:10-15)
Should John have refused to record his prophecies on the Isle of Patmos? (The entire book of Revelation)
According to this theory, they all should have just told God, "No, you're not allowed to talk to me. You said it was finished, so you are not allowed to say anything to me until you return."
Or . . . Maybe that's not what Christ meant when He said it was finished.
What do you think was finished when He said that?
John 19:30
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, "It is finished," and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
14 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoDoes evolution move in sudden, mysterious growth spurts?
I hope someone can not only answer my question, but point me to some good resources.
I remember being taught in high school that evolution was extremely slow and gradual. We started with single-celled organisms and over millions of years and an unfathomable number of random genetic mutations we evolved into the complex variety of species on earth today.
But as I read about prehistoric species they always say it existed from X years B.C.E. to Y years B.C.E. and I have a hard time with that beginning date. I understand a species becoming extinct. That's easy to picture. But I would expect the beginning of a species to be fairly indestinguishable.
Based on my understanding, I would expect as we go back further into history, the skulls would just gradually morph and change shape and the species would become less complex, but it would be hard to say where a species truly began.
What is the current understanding of how a species originates?
4 AnswersBiology1 decade agoWhere was Jesus going?
When Jesus walked on the water in Mark chapter 6, it says He wasn't headed for the ship with His disciples in it. He was going to pass them until the disciples saw Him and thought He was a ghost and cried out.
So where was He going?
Here's the actual passage from Mark 6 for reference:
45 Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.
46 And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.
47 And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.
48 And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them,
49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out,
50 for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid."
51 And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded,
52 for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.
8 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoHow do I grab data from Yahoo Answers for my blog?
I would love to have my questions and answers turned into a blog. I think that would be pretty cool.
Does anyone know of an automated way to have my questions and answers post to my blog?
I know I've seen several websites that grab questions and answers from Yahoo Answers and import them into their own websites to make it look like they have an active bulletin board going on.

1 AnswerYahoo Answers1 decade agoCreationists, if God didn't create the sun until the fourth day what was the source of light on the first day?
I wholeheartedly believe the Bible to be the word of God and I believe God created the earth and everything in it. But I disagree with the young-earth interpretation of Genesis.
So what was lighting up the earth on day one?
Here are the passages:
Day One: (from Genesis chapter 1)
1In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
Day Four: (again from Genesis chapter 1)
14And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, 15and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth." And it was so. 16And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.
21 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoChristians, where does the Bible contradict Evolution?
I believe in the Bible (Old and New Testaments) but I also accept the evidence supporting evolution, as do many scientists who are also Christian.
What I don't accept is Young Earth Creationism.
I want to hear from Christians who don't accept evolution. What scriptures do you use to reject the scientific community's views?
Do my views make me un-Christian?
15 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoChristians: are you a cosmist?
Cosmism is the belief that heaven is an actual place and that God and the angels and so forth all exist in our physical universe. Do you believe heaven is in our universe or is it some other dimension / alternate reality?
And where do you get your belief about this?

2 AnswersYahoo Answers1 decade agoHow do I handle a thieving ex?
My wife and I split up at the end of last year. I've tried to make it as drama-free as it can be. I give her a lot more financial support than she would have gotten if we had just run crying to the judge because I don't want her to lose the house.
Since we were together for most of last year, we filed our 2007 taxes jointly. Then this year when they announced the economic incentive checks, we knew our check would come combined, but we talked about it ahead of time and said we would split it 50/50.
Then when the check showed up at the end of June, she forged my name on the back, cashed it and kept it all. She told me bills were piling up and she needed the money.
Then this week she went on vacation to California.
