Creationists, if God didn't create the sun until the fourth day what was the source of light on the first day?

I wholeheartedly believe the Bible to be the word of God and I believe God created the earth and everything in it. But I disagree with the young-earth interpretation of Genesis.

So what was lighting up the earth on day one?

Here are the passages:

Day One: (from Genesis chapter 1)

1In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

3And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

Day Four: (again from Genesis chapter 1)

14And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, 15and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth." And it was so. 16And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

Update:

Wait, if God was the light and the light appeared when he said "Let there be light", then are you saying that God was not light before that point?

Update 2:

I think the mondo contradiction is thinking that a day has to be 24 hours when there's not even a sun to rise until the fourth day. I think it's pretty obvious that God's measurements of "days" here are not 24 hours long.

Update 3:

I seriously think "Let there be light" sounds like a speech someone would make at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Big Bang.

God Himself was the source of that light. He separated the light from the darkness and called the light day and the darkness night. I really don't understand why that is such a hard concept for some people to grasp. North of the arctic circle the sun doesn't set for months at a time and then it doesn't rise for months. Does that mean their year is only a few days long? Of course not. A day is the amount of time it takes for the earth to rotate 360 degrees. It has nothing to do, really, with the sun. The sun appearing to rise and set is just a consequence of it.

Verse three says that God created light. Does He need an object to produce that light?

But why does this impact your belief in the young earth? Having the sun on the fourth day and light on the first day doesn't change anything else about the creation process.

If you whole-heartedly believe the Bible then there is no problem with the young earth interpretation. It is much better than the gap theory. I would check out the answers in genesis website.

I think you are thinking that when God created the Earth there was nothing else in existence in all the Galaxy.

"In the beginning" refers to the beginning of Earth's creation There were other stars, galaxies, etc already in existence. There was light but not on Earth because God had not started forming or creating it at that point.

God is light. He only extended part of what He is to make light appear on Earth.

God is self-contained. Everything that is.... came DIRECTLY from the essence of God. That is why we as humans and everything else on this Earth are all connected together from God whether we want to believe it or not.

You are right. God does not measure days as 24 hours. In fact(sorry I don't have the back-up for this) the Jews, (long, long time ago), considered sun-up to sun-down as 1 day and sun-down to the next sun-up as the second day.

If you look at the creation of Earth you see how God was preparing it for mankind.

God is so truly awesome in his knowledge and power it is absolutely mind-blowing.

If God himself was the light, it means that God is day and night according to Gen 1:5. Today we know this is not the case. I'm not a Christian but if I were I would consider the possibility that first God created the day/night cycle in heaven, then created it on earth.

the verse explains itself. The problem is that everyone thinks the sun or stars can be the only light source. So here's the thing, God created light first, then the stars which produce light in and of themselves. But God made the first light. think of it on the same level as water or dirt. God just made them.

Mondo Contradiction there. How can you say that the bible is the word of god, and then not take it literally?

The Radiance of gods holiness lighted things enough.

  • And it later texts God is referred to as "the light" as well as Jesus being referred to as "light".... when people talk of seeing God and Heaven they always refer to a BRIGHT LIGHT. Another question I would as is, if God is the creator and all powerful, why would He need a source of light one the first day????

1 John 1:5> This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare unto you, that God is LIGHT, and in Him is no darkness at all.

God is Light. He is and was in the beginning the source of light.

    Jesus!

Jhn 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Jhn 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

Jhn 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

    AMEN!

    And check this out:

Rev 22:3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

Rev 22:4 And they shall see his face; and his name [shall be] in their foreheads.

Rev 22:5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

The light came from God. It doesn't mean the sun. What God can do isn't logical-He's not human. That is why people are confused and ask or doubt is because they think of God as a person and not a force.
