  • I think I found a good deal, but my dad seems to disagree...?

I found a '00 Celica for under $4,000. I think it's a good deal, considering it's been very well taken care of and is in beautiful shape (it's a little high mileage, but has a new clutch, new brakes, new tires, new exhaust, winter tires...the list goes on).

My dad, on the other hand, thinks anything above $1,200 is a complete rip off, and is actually angry at me for wanting to buy the car. I even lied to him and told him it was only $2,500 so he wouldn't make that big of a deal out of it, and he still flipped out.

I still think it's a good deal. It's my own money and I'll be the one paying for the insurance, I'm 19, and I just want something reliable and fun to drive.

This will be my second car. I had a Saturn SL beforehand, which was a reliable little car that I got for free from a cousin, but it was definitely starting to show its age, and wouldn't pass a smog test.

The Celica will also be cheaper for my insurance, as it's not as popular as the Saturn.

  • Japanese Speakers...help?

My Japanese professor is asking us to do an oral interview with her, basically doing a show-and-tell on an item, where she asks us questions about it.

She posted a sample audio file with sample questions, but I'm having a hard time decoding one of the questions.

    It sounds like

"Doshi de, sore wo kaimashita ka."

Kaimashita means to buy, right? But what does doshi de mean? Or is she saying "doshite".

Any Native Japanese speakers? What does this sound like it could mean to you?

  • After charging my iPod Touch?

After I'm done charging my 2G iPod Touch in the morning, the battery stays at 97%. As the day goes on, it actually goes up to 100%, then starts declining.

    Am I overcharging it?

  • Rear ended someone and didn't file a report...?

The car in front of him stopped quickly, and I didn't have enough time to stop. I only barely hit him... There was no damage to my car, his 2010 Charger had a little tiny imprint of the bolt that's used to fasten my license plate. We exchanged information, he got all of mine, and I got all of his EXCEPT for his insurance policy number (mistake?).

He told me he'd bring it to a body shop for an estimate and call me within the next few days. I'm going to call him in a couple of days regardless...I'm guessing it won't be over $400 to fix a little tiny ding. I'm just wondering if I can trust him. He had a friend in the car, but they both seemed pretty friendly..

Because I'm 18 and this is my first accident (I've been driving for 2 years), we decided not to go through insurance. My premium would probably triple...it's already high enough as it is for a student with a part time job! I don't want to have to sell the car, either, because I need it for university.

I'm just freaking out now. I'm wondering if he's going to try and screw me over. What's the worst that can happen? It's just an imprint the size of a 12mm bolt...

I'm wondering if I should call the insurance company to let them know, but I don't want to end up paying $9000/year to insure a stupid little $1000 Saturn. And the fact that I didn't get his insurance info or file a police report...I doubt I could report it either way.

  • I put over 20,000km on my car this year...?

I just remembered I told my insurance I thought I'd only drive ~10,000km, but looking at my odometer on my car...I've put over 20,000km on it. Is this a problem, or am I just worrying? They won't deny me additional coverage when it comes time to renew, will they?

  • Carbureted engine dies when let off the throttle?

I have a gokart with a small 3.5HP carbureted engine on it. The engine ran fine for the longest time, but recently it started stalling.

It starts fine and idles nicely, but when I let off the throttle after taking it for a spin it just dies.

I start it with the choke on all the way, let it run for a few seconds, then put the choke to about 1/2 to get it running nice. I take it out for a spin, but if I let off the throttle to slow down, it simply dies. No sputtering, just dies.

If I try and start it right away, it won't. I have to put the choke all the way on for it to fire back up again, then adjust it to half so it doesn't die again. I can keep going for as long as I want with a consistently good amount of power, but if I let off to slow down it completely shuts down.

I'm thinking about cleaning the carburetor, but want to know what would be the best part to clean.

It sat indoors with the fuel off for the winter.

  • I'm in Grade 12 and I find myself not caring about school anymore...university?

I'm in my final semester of grade 12 with an 80% average. I've been on honor roll for 4 years straight, I'm planning on going to university next year for Computer Sciences...yet I find that I have absolutely no interest in my courses anymore. I had a pretty tough load last semester (Grade 12 University Level English with a hard-making, high-homework-load teacher; French Immersion courses, University Advanced Functions, and University Data Management).

This semester, with Automotive Sciences, University Calculus, and Physical Education, I find myself not caring about my marks, skipping school more often then I know I should, and not having any interest in excelling. I barely pay attention in Calculus, and almost know for a fact that I won't get any higher than a 70% as a final mark. I haven't done one piece of homework since the beginning of the semester (over 2 months ago, and we get homework every night).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a stupid kid. I've been rebuilding computers that I found on curb-sides and selling them as almost a profession since I was 11, and have made countless positive decisions money-wise.

I just don't get why I don't care about school any more. I need some positive work-ethics for university.

    Any input?

  • Capacitor and Resistor leak-down question?

I'm trying to make myself a power-off timer of approximately 30 seconds. It's going to be wired like this one: http://www.astron.nl/~smirnov/poweroff.gif

The 50 Ohm resistor + switch to ground is not going to be included, and neither is the variable ohm resistor + LED.

    I have a transistor with the P/N: 2N7000

    Max VDS: 60V

    Polarity: N Channel

    Continuous IDS: 200mA

    Threshold VGS: 2.1V

    RDS (ON): 5 Ohms

    Power Dissipation: 0.4W

My question is: What combination of Capacitor and Resistor should I use if I'm trying to get the unit to keep the relay's coil active for at approx. 30 seconds?

  • Does this sentence make sense?

"I’m naturally a guy, in that I love machines."

When I read it, it seems to make no sense at all. But when I say it, it seems to flow as if it does make sense. What's your opinion?

  • I just bought a set of snow tires for my car, insurance?

My insurance company, Belairdirect, offers a 5% discount for owning a set of 4 winter tires. I just bought a set of 4, but am wondering if the discount will be counted on this insurance term, which ends next August.

They're offices are closed right now, as it's late Saturday, but I'm still wondering.

I live in Canada, by the way.

  • What resistor should I use for this?

I'm buying this 18-LED strip for my car's dash and gauge cluster, as the stock lights are burnt out.

The whole set of 18 LEDs draws 102mA at 12 VDC, and produces 1200mcd per bulb. I'm buying two of these strips, and each strip will be wired in parallel.

I've heard talk that a total of 90ohms of resistance is fair enough to bring down the brightness, but I want to know what wattage the resistors should be, or if I can wire 1/4 watt resistors in series BEFORE the circuit splits off for each strip.

The problem is, that these LEDs are going to be very bright. I've been looking around, and have found quite a bit of resistors. I've been told that using about 90ohms of resistance should be sufficient, although I'm not quite sure what kind of resistors I should get.

  • Catalytic converter break-in time?

My car isn't passing an emissions test, so I'm replacing the catalytic converter.

In order to get the car on the road, I need it to pass the test. But if the catalytic converter hasn't been broken in yet, then it won't function properly, and will end up failing the emissions test anyways, right?

How can I break it in?

  • What's the point of owning a car at 17 if...?

I have a car already, I'm just getting it ready for the road. My dad says that "I have the right to be excited to get my car on the road, because it's a sign of independence and growing up."

Anyways, today I'm going to sell a game for my PS3 to some guy on a classifieds website (he's giving me $40 for the game, plus an extra $5 to drop it off, and he wants to meet me in a computer store on an extremely busy street). I need a car to go drop it off, so I ask my step mother if I can use hers. She says that I can, but I need the permission of my father before I go. So she calls my dad, and less than 20 seconds later hangs up.

She looks at me and says, (and I quote) "No, you can't drop the game off. The guy could be a murderer."

What is the point of getting my car on the road in order to become more independent if my dad's just going to deny me going places because everyone around me could be a murderer?

I'm 17 by the way. I'll be an adult in less than 4 months.

  • How long does gasoline stay fresh?

My car has about 1/4 tank of gasoline in it. It's been parked since the beginning of February, and I'm planning on getting the car on the road around June or so.

Is the gas still good, and will it still be good by the time June comes around? I need the car to pass an emissions test before it gets registered for the road, and I don't want to waste the gas that's in it.

  • I need to buy a part from American BestBuy?

  • If I were to bid on an item on eBay?

If I were to bid lowly on an item on eBay, for example bidding $150 on something like an Audi R8...and the auction were to end with my bid being the highest...

I want to know if the person has to make the sale. If the bid is just ridiculously low, would the person have to send me the item, or can they simply refuse?
