  • How is a microwave transformer wired?

I disassembled a microwave and removed the transformer which I intended to reuse in a DIY power supply. However, I did not pay attention to the initial wiring and when I plug the transformer straight into a wall outlet (the original primary coil intact), it rapidly overheats and begins smoking.

Microwaves run at anywhere from 750 to 1500 watts, so they aren't just dissipating excess power as heat in a resistor, not to mention a resistor rated for even 100-200 watts is large and expensive. My question is, what piece of the circuit am I missing? How can I make this transformer work again?

Thank you so much to anyone who can help me shed some light on this situation!

  • Gelatin Jello turned white?

I made a batch of extra thick jello (one packet in quarter cup of water). After hardening overnight, it was a translucent yellow (normal for unflavored unsweetened jello). However, after removing it from the mold, it turned completely white within 2 hours.

Does anyone know what happened to it?? Is it still safe to eat? I m assuming this is some kind of reaction to air since it didn t happen until I removed it from the mold.

  • Make lemonade more flavorful?

I am endeavoring to make a lemonade-type drink that tastes so good you simply can t put it down without finishing it.

Regular lemonade just seems rather dull. Any ideas on how to enhance the flavor? I have tried some additions such as ginger, lime, even nutmeg and cinnamon, as well as honey and agave in place of sugar, but I can t find the taste I am looking for.

I look forward to any and all suggestions on how to make the best lemonade ever! :)

  • What are small valuable components that can be salvaged from cars?

I am interested in going to local scrap yards and purchasing small components from salvage cars at a good discount and then selling them online. What are some of the best valuable (and small!) pieces that can be salvaged from cars?

My ideas so far are: dash lights (these can go for a decent bit depending on the model), fuses (although these are a bit cheap and may not make a lot of money), and maybe stereo components (although these are a bit larger than I had been aiming for).

Any suggestions on small, expensive car parts that can be salvaged and resold online? :)

  • How does a collapsing star gain rotational kinetic energy?

In physics class today, we did a calculation (conservation of angular momentum) to show that a star with a constant mass M will gain rotational kinetic energy as it collapses.

My question is, where does this energy come from? It seems like it should come from gravitational potential energy, but from what I understand, the gravitational potential energy of a self-gravitating sphere is

    U=-3GM^2/5R

which would mean that the uncollapsed star would actually have less gravitational potential energy than the collapsed neutron star. How does that work?? I'm so confused how the star could gain rotational kinetic and gravitational potential energy as it collapses.

    Thanks!

  • Personal Holding Company Tax?

Bob sets up the company Bob, Inc. (a standard c corporation) for which he owns 100% of the stock. Then, Bob, Inc. sets up LittleBob LLC and BigBob LLC as two wholly-owned subsidiary companies. LittleBob and BigBob are operating companies that generate active income while Bob, Inc. is a holding company.

Now, is Bob, Inc. subject to the personal holding company 15% penalty tax? Basically, are the distributions from LittleBob and BigBob LLC operating companies treated the same as if they had been c corporations issuing dividends to Bob, Inc. to collect?

I would appreciate any and all guidance on this matter. Thanks!

  • Florida State Income Tax on Out of State Income?

I form a C corporation in Florida (let's call it Flocorp). I also live in Florida, the company is based in Florida, and the majority of product sales is in Florida. However, Flocorp also does some sales in other states (let's say 15% of sales are in other states).

Now, my question is, will that 15% of sales happening out-of-state still be subject to the 5.5% Florida Corporate Income Tax?

Any explanations and especially references to actual tax law/sites are greatly appreciated!

  • Does a corporation pay taxes on income from the sale of shares?

If I form a c corporation and authorize 1,000,000 shares, then sell 500,000 shares to someone for $10,000, would my corporation be taxed on the $10,000?

It seems like the transaction shouldn't be taxed since, in a sense, the corporation would be trading a percentage of its assets for an amount of cash without actually increasing its value, but I am not sure about this.

    Help anyone? Thanks!

  • Provisional Patent Question?

Suppose I were to file an extremely broad provisional patent application, for example, claiming that I had developed new products U, V, W, X, Y, and Z. However, over the next year, I found that products V and Z had already been patented. Then, at the end of the year, I filed a full utility patent on products U, W, X, and Y and claimed the provisional patent on my full utility patent.

My question is, given the above scenario, could I be sued for patent infringement? I would think I would be okay since my "real" utility patent did not infringe on any other patents, but since my provisional patent did make those claims, I am not sure.

  • Living on a boat in Florida laws and regulations?

I currently live in Tallahassee and am hoping to soon purchase a boat and live onboard, sailing the Ochlockonee river and commuting to the city when I need to. What are the docking/anchoring regulations regarding living onboard a boat? Can I just tie my boat anywhere along the river? Can I anchor pretty much anywhere (except obviously restricted areas)? I would greatly appreciate any information regarding the laws and regulations (for Florida, Tallahassee, and/or the Ochlockonee River in particular); also if you could direct me to websites or government agencies which would be able to provide me with additional information, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

  • Air-filled capacitor with inserted dielectric?

A 12 nF air-filled parallel plate capacitor is connected across a 75 V power supply until the

capacitor is fully charged. The power supply is then removed, and a dielectric with constant 3.5 is

inserted between the plates. How much energy is stored by the capacitor after the dielectric has

    been inserted?

So before the dielectric was inserted, I calculated the energy using U = 1/2(C)(V^2) to get an energy of 33.75 joules. Since the dielectric was inserted after the power supply was shut off, no additional energy was added, but how is it that any energy is lost? I don't understand how energy can be lost by the mere insertion of a dielectric or how to calculate what energy was lost, especially since (in my understanding), if the power supply was left on then the energy would increase. Help anyone?? Thanks!

  • Accepting then denying college transfer?

So at the beginning of the semester, I applied to FSU as a transfer and NYU CAS as an internal transfer ( I am currently a student at NYU Poly). I am still not sure if I want to be at NYU or FSU. If I accept NYU's offer of transfer admission and then change my mind and wish to attend FSU, will there be any serious repercussions?

Because I am an *INTERNAL* transfer to NYU, there is no admissions deposit, so I don't have to worry about losing that. The only thing I am worried about is accepting the internal transfer to NYU, and then having problems getting out of it later if I wish to go to FSU instead.

Does anyone have any information or knowledge on this issue? Thanks so much

  • How to open open .mat files?

I'm attempting to open a .mat file; however MATLAB does not recognize it and my computer will not open it. I went to Default Programs, but MATLAB is not an option; I clicked Browse Computer but when i click on MATLAB, it just opens and shows me all the MATLAB sub-folders instead of associating the entire MATLAB program with .mat file types.

What do I do?? I need to access the data in this file for hw :/

  • Join the military and work for a private company?

Can a person serve (either actively or in the reserves) in the military and also own/work for a private company that does business with the military (say selling equipment)?

For instance, could someone be an air force reserves engineer and also work for Lockheed Martin which develops aircraft for the air force?

Or could someone be an active duty navy engineer and also own a company that makes boat parts for the Navy?

I've really wondered about that question for a while. Would the military construe either/both of those situations as a conflict of interest or anything? Is there any precedent for that sort of situation? Thanks in advance!

I would greatly appreciate anyone who could direct me to the original document. Thanks!

  • battery power supply question?

I need a portable power supply that will output about 36-40 volts at 3-3.5 amps for a total output of about 100 watts. I can't seem to find any batteries of a reasonable size that will provide this power. Lithium coin cells don't seem to be able to output more than 100-200 mA at most, lithium 18650 batteries could probably provide enough amperage but I would need 8-10 of them to provide enough voltage.

Does anyone know any small batteries I could use to give me this power output???

    Thank you in advance!

  • System of Differential Equations Help?

    X' = (1 2 ) X

    (-5 -1)

That is the equation (please forgive the bad notation, it is suppose to be the X' vector equals the matrix A times vector X). I got as far as calculating the two eigenvalues and eigenvectors which I verified were correct with the book but I always come out with a different final answer.

I would very much is someone could explain the entire process STEP by STEP all the way to the final answer in as much detail as possible. Thanks so much!

  • Ammonium Chloride and Sodium Nitrite Reaction?

I have been trying to generate nitrogen by reacting ammonium chloride and sodium nitrite in aqueous solution. I was trying to collect the evolved nitrogen in a bottle over water. However, the reaction seemed to proceed extremely slowly. Even when I put the bottle (containing the reactants in aqueous solution) in a hot water bath, the gas still was produced at an extremely slow rate.

Is there some sort of catalyst or additive I can use to increase the reaction rate so that I can produce usable amounts of nitrogen in a reasonable time? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!
