  • Would you put a GFCI outlet on a circuit protected by a GFCI breaker?

If you had a single pole 20A GFCI protected circuit breaker in your panel, feeding one single 20A outlet outside in your garden (about 70 feet from the house), all enclosed in underground PVC conduit with a weatherproof device box, would you have to install a GFCI protected outlet or could you install a regular one?

  • What happens to the energy contained in two waves in destructive interference?

In physics class they used to tell us about wave interference. The example for destructive interference was in a car muffler, where the sound waves from the engine were split in two, and then one was reflected back onto the other so that the peak of one wave would meet the trough of the other, canceling the two waves out. My question is what happens to the energy? The energy of a wave is related to it's amplitude. Two identical waves contain an amount of energy related to 2 times the amplitude, but after they meet and cancel out the amplitude becomes zero and so does the energy. The energy has to go somewhere, it can't just "dissappear" or else we would have a violation of the law of conservation of energy.

  • Would you like to see the use of the pillory come back in your country?

In my province, crimes such as theft, burglary, vandalism, impared driving and violent crimes are on the sharp incline. The place is being run rampant with criminals who often get little more than a small fine for their actions. Personally I think we should take these people and lock them in the pillory for a few days at the local town hall or other public place. We should do it just like the old days where a sign detailing their crime would be placed nearby and the public could gather and taunt and throw rotten fruit at them. I dont know about you, but for me, but public humiliation would be a far better deterrant than jail time or fines. And people who commit these crimes deserve it. What do you think?

  • Do you think is wrong to dump off sods in the woods?

I have some left over grass sods from a landscaping project. The pile is about the size of a regular sized dishwasher. I can't get anybody to take them away and I don't want to put them in a landfill. Do you think it's wrong and would you consider it littering if I just drove them to some remote area and dumped them off in the woods on the side of the road? Similar to the way some scumbags dump off their garbage and old appliances except this is biogegradable organic material.

  • Do you think that Jack Layton would have been Canada's next Prime Minister in 2015 had he not died?

After the results of the 2011 federal election when the NDP became the opposition I was sure that Layton was next in line for Prime Minister in 2015. Coming up to the anniversary of his death I'm still deeply saddened by his loss. He was certanly the greatest Canadian that ever lived.

  • Would you switch back to Windows XP from Windows 7 if you could?

I recently upgraded my windows XP to windows 7 on the same computer. I think it sucks. There's lots of things that dont work anymore. My keyboard and mouse stop working on a regular basis while windows says it's not recognized; an hour later it works again. iTunes stopped picking up my iPod touch. I have to manually set permission to change something as simple as a word file. The compound taskbar thingy is annoying. It's garbage and I wish I could go back.

  • Do you think Hydroponics can possibly be cost effective?

In my opinion, unless you're growing pot, there's no way that hydroponics can be cost effective unless you are using natural light and homemade natural nutrients. What do you think?

  • How should I ground the enclosure of a fusible safety switch if it doesn't have a ground screw?

I have a 30A double pole fusible safety switch in my garage wired up to the 20A outlets in the garage. The reason I have the switch there is so that I can shut off power to the outlets and lock it with a padlock for numerous safety reasons, mostly to prevent accidental machine startups. The switch has two hot terminals (line and load) with the fuse and switch contacts between them. It also has a neutral busbar with three terminals and a brass screw bonding the busbar to the enclosure. The line and load neutrals are supposed to go in two of the terminals and the line and load grounds are supposed to be twisted together and put into the third terminal. The problem is that the neutral would now be bonded in a place other than the main service entrance. the switch itself is fed by a 20A breaker in the sub panel in the garage. The garage panel is fed by a 60A breaker in the main panel. If I simply twist the line and load ground wires together without securing them to the neutral busbar then the enclosure of the switch wouldn't be grounded, there is no separate ground screw or lug whatsoever present inside the switch. A grounding bar that is sold separately for this switch is available but the guy at the electrical supply store where I got the switch said that he's sold thousands of these switches and never before has he seen the grounding bar ordered. It has to be special ordered from the USA which isn't even in this country. So I'm stuck and I'm sure I'm not the first guy who had this switch and said WTF when he tried to wire it. I'm not a licensed electrician but I generally know what I'm doing and I get all my work inspected and it always passes. I actually know more about electricity than most electricians because I'm an electrical engineer, so I don't want to hear all your "holier than thou, call an electrician, electricians are the only people who can comprehend stuff about wiring" bullshit. Just because I might not know the specific part I need to ground a switch doesn't mean I didn't design any of the electricial devices in your home. BTW the switch is a Siemens 30A double pole general duty fusible safety switch. The catalog number is LFC211N. Thanks.

  • How to build my house back up after it caved in?

Please help, one day I decided to knock down the wall to make the house open concept. When I took down the wall and cut what I thought was a header the upstairs collapsed into the downstairs. I called a builder after I got out of the hospital and he said it was a LVL beam that I had cut and that it was holding up the entire upstairs. Now the city condemned my house and I have nowhere to live. How do I fix it?

  • Is it true that McDonald's Fries are Synthesized in a Lab?

I herd that you can make McDoanld's french fries by titrating sodium hydroxide with hydrochloric acid and then adding some organic compound, I forget what it was...hexane or hexanol I think. Is this true? Forgive me but I haven't done chemistry since I did my undergraduate degree back in the late 70's.

  • How long do people live?

How old are you when you die? I know it's 10 years for cats but I don't know what age it is for humans. I am 52 years old right now and my son just started his Ph.D program in astronautical engineering. I want to know if I will be alive to see him graduate.

  • What do they put in ice cream that makes it taste sweet?

Like I know that ice cream is made from milk but that is not sweet. What other ingredient do they put in it that makes it sweet? Or does it just get sweet on it's own when they freeze it?
