  • Organic Chemistry -- Robinson Annulation question?

Show the two (neutral) organic starting materials that would be used to synthesize the following compound via a Robinson Annulation reaction.

The product on the left is correct, the one on the right is not. The reasoning for it being wrong: "Incorrect. A β-diketone is needed here, which goes on to generate an enolate ion that reacts with the α,β-unsaturated ketone."

  • Virology/immunology question...?

Clearly new viruses do on occasion enter a population of susceptible individuals, although it is believed that this event is rare. If you were part of a research team that has isolated what you believe to be a new virus, how would you demonstrate that this is truly a "new" virus in that population?

  • is there any way I can challenge this?

I attend a public university in North Dakota, and I parked in a 30 minute parking zone around 10:40 am to pick up my friend. I left at about 10:50, and brought my friend downtown. At about 11:30, we parked in the same area again, went into the dining center to eat, then returned to the car by about 11:50. I had a parking ticket issued at 11:34.

I went to the parking office to appeal this, since I was there for a few minutes before receiving a ticket, and they said my car was logged in the lot at 10:45. According to the regulations, which I could only access that day when she provided HER copy to me, if a person parks in the same area again within 24 hours, it's assumed they have not moved.

I made an appeal, but it was denied. Is there anything I can do or cite to have this parking ticket dismissed? I haven't had any in the past year and a half here.

  • Simple calculus problem help...?

I just started my calc II class, and we're working on a bunch of review problems. This one should be really simple, but I'm drawing a blank.

A drop of ink dropped onto a piece of cloth creates a circular stain. The radius of the stain increases at a constant rate of 3 mm per second. Given this, determine how fast the area of the stain is increasing with respect to radius of the stain and with respect to time elapsed at the point in time when the radius of the stain is 6 mm.

  • Internet connectivity problems...?

I have a laptop with the Windows 7 OS, and I have IE (64-bit and the regular 32-bit) and Google Chrome. A few days ago, my Internet started acting strangely. I could connect to the Internet, but neither Chrome or IE or display web pages (any of them, for that matter). I used the troubleshooter and nothing came up. It told me to use online resources. Today, I discovered that my IE 64-bit still works, but is much slower than the 32-bit IE or Chrome.

I have checked my proxy/LAN settings, changed my prefered DNS and IP stuff to what google suggested for chrome (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4), asked for help on the google help page (and got nothing constructive), restarted my computer, scanned for malware, spyware, and other viruses... I don't know what I should do.

  • Atheists are satanic and evil...?

Honestly? Is that how far society has come?

Atheists choose not to believe in any sort of supreme being or creator. Thus, they believe in no evil force such as Satan. In fact, most atheists I know live happy, wonderful lives. Generally, they are great people. So why do so many people believe they are evil?

I'm agnostic, for the record. I have jumped between atheism and agnosticism for a few years.

  • Who can help with this problem?

I'm the captain of our school's knowledge bowl team, but because of budget cuts, the activity has been cut altogether. It costs about 2500 dollars to fund it each year, and there is no way for us to get that through simple fundraising (we have about 10 active members).

Is there any business, organization, or person we can ask who may be able to help fund the activity? I know it seems strange, but we just want knowledge bowl to survive. It's one of the last academic activities our school has left.

  • I just heard this ad on the radio...?

It was for a parochial school, and it said that everyone should go there because of wonderful funding, great education, amazing teachers... and so on and so forth. The last point, though, was what I found irksome.

They were talking about instilling "strong Christian values" in their students.

Do people not realize that non-Christians (Atheists included, of course) value life and happiness and freedom just as much as the next person? Someone in school brought these "Christian values" up in sociology, too.

Sorry. It just gets on my nerves. Who else is bothered by this?

  • I need some ideas...?

I've been suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder for some time now. Until rather recently (about four months ago), my only quirks were keeping things organized, washing my hands, and obsessing over even numbers.

Lately I've became stressed with my various college courses (I'm a junior in high school), work, and extracurricular activities. Plus, my mother and I are experiencing some financial difficulties. With all of these factors compiling, I feel my OCD has gotten much worse. I can't even take a walk without feeling stressed about the lines, number of tiles, different sources, even vs. odd numbers of steps... I wash my hands MUCH more often than I ever have, I re-take steps to end with my left foot... the list goes on!

In the beginning of December, I told my mother I needed help because I have a serious mental condition (OCD). She told me it was 'all in my head.' I was astonished by her answer; I couldn't even talk to her about it for two weeks. Then, I brought it up again, and she asked, "well, do you really want to take a bunch of medications? ... I thought not."

I don't know what to do! I'm too afraid to ask for help (I'm also a perfectionist---- yes, it's a disease ---so I won't allow myself to look inferior. My mother really doesn't seem to get how serious obsessive-compulsive disorder can be, and now I'm just overloaded with anxiety, stress, and even depression. It's pretty overwhelming...

Sorry. I just had to vent; I couldn't do it elsewhere, so I must do it here, where I am to remain anonymous.

  • Why exactly is it that the Christian God...?

is able to commit the seven deadly sins, yet we cannot?

In fact, in the Bible, He even says so. He is most obviously wrathful, but he is also envious. And don't say I'm wrong, either. You can look it up at ANY time. Why is it that he can do these things, yet expects us not to? That's not at all fair, is it?

  • Alright. Yet another great question...?

Who here, on Yahoo! Answers, finds enjoyment in the game of Dungeons and Dragons?

It's really quite a simple question. I've never actually played the game itself, but I have watched as a real game unfolded. I find it quite interesting, so I was wondering who else did. If you do, would you ever play it online? Contact me if this is so.
