How are some ways that we can help keep our elderly at home, and safe, and not have to be in nursing homes.?

we need to be able to keep our parents and grandparents at home with us, and take care of them at our homes, and not stick them in some god awful nursing home, and have the devices to take care of them, and the help to do so, how can we do this as a family and how do we get the out side help to do this also.. ?? We are the only country that throw our elderly out to pasture and ignore them and we miss so much.. our children miss so much..
We need to be one family, and all live together, and learn from each other. and pass down traditions to the small ones. and bring in new traditions with each new marriage.. and each new baby.. We don't have to all live in the same house, but on the same land, in our own houses. in the same area, and take care of each other, we are put here on this earth to take care of each other, and we are not doing that, why is that ? why have we left our family, and we don't care about them any more, we don't help them any more? is the dollar that important now??

It has to be tackled from both side---It is very important to make the parents/grandparent feel important and required as well as children and grandchildren feel that there is something which could be learned from elders----In fact there is so much of experience and knowledge even in the head/brain of the aged, that even if on wheel chair, they can be like a training college.

Not all nursing homes are as you put it "God awful." Most families are very active and involved in the care of their loved ones after they are in a nursing facility. For them placing their loved one in a nursing facility IS caring for them. Many people cannot care for their loved ones at home and there are numerous reasons for this. If you chose to keep your loved one with you at home there are state funded programs that help you do this. Here in Texas it's called the CBA (community based alternatives) program. Please bear in mind that caring for a loved one is a 24/7 deal. There are no breaks or vacations. If you become tired and need help please call your local Adult Protective Services agency, they have resources that can help you in emergency placement situations. Good Luck.

There are many people who care about the elderly. They specialize in geriactrics and follow their calling to take care of the elderly.
