I've noticed many cats doing this, it is a natural thing called "flehming" and you might find the following link helpful. He's trying to smell the birds and doesn't realise he can't through the glass! Bless!

I had a cat like that before. We adopted her from the pound. She was crazy, less than a week after we took her home, I had to bring her back because she attacked my boyfriend.
