Why does my laptop mouse NOT move to where I point?

I can move the mouse on my gateway touchpad, but then it just returns to where ever I started without staying where I though I had put it. When I then hook up an external Microsoft laser mouse that mouse does work, but I am not always ablte to accommodate an external mouse.
Also the touchpad mouse does not always do this!!

Click start button > control panel > double click mouse icon. A properties dialog box will open. Depending on what kind of touchpad you have, you might see a Synaptics dialog box or a typical Windows dialog box. In any case, you should see a tab called hardware. Click it and you should see whether the touchpad is working properly and a troubleshooting button. You might also see a tab called device settings. On one of these tabs you should also se the name of your touchpad. Double click on the name, check the hardware tab, but somewheres you will have the option to change touchpad sensitivity, scrolling, etc.
