Abandoned kittens smell- what can i bathe them with?
My kids found a box of abandoned kittens at the park today, and I don't have the heart to leave animals like that alone. I think they are around 5, 6 or 7 weeks old... their eyes are still blue. I've fed them kitten formula and wiped their bottoms to help them go. When we found them, the box they were in just reeked of urine and so of course the kitties smell too. I know I can expect a certain amount of odor, but they are a little dirty, very smelly and I want to wash them. I have some regular cat shampoo, b/c I already had a cat, but it's not for fleas or anything... Would it be all right or should I use something more gentle or would just a wet rag suffice? If you don't have baby shampoo, you can use dishsoap. It won't hurt them and if it is a citrus scented one it can take care of any fleas they may have. Just make sure they are dry and have a warm place to cuddle when you are through.
Well if the shampoo says it is safe for kittens, you could use that. Or you could pick up cat wipes at the store, they are in the pet section and they would probably like them better than an actual bath. Also you can put them in the microwave, so that they are warm and the cats will be more receptive. They're very convenient. I would be the same way if I found those kittens... it is a shame that people cannot take care of their animals or have them spayed. But yeah, try the wipes. They even have lavender scented ones.
I think the kitty shampoo that you have would be ok for them. Maybe it would be a good idea if you would dilute it just a bit because they are so little. There should be enough shampoo in the solution to get them cleaned up and still be gentle enough on them. Right now, they're young, and they don't know exactly what to do yet to groom themselves.
I too, adopted an abandoned kitty. And I got her home and bathed her in some warm water and a mild shampoo solution. She cleaned up very nice. So I think that would be ok in this case with your kitties.

My shampoo has been used on 4 week old kittens that were rescued and loaded with fleas. It killed all the fleas and calmed them down because of the lavender. They also smelled really great after their bath. You can find it at http://www.take1products.com If you need to wash them straight away, use baby shampoo and make sure you dry them very well. Their chest area is the most important to get really dry. good luck;^)
Baby shampoo works just fine. Use warm water and be gentle. Make sure to wrap them in a towel and dry them off as best you can and have like a cozy box with a towel or a blanket in it so they'll not get too cold.
