Brokenhearted and Scared?
My cat has been inside for 3 years now. He is neutered and has been fearful of the outside environment. I started a new job that requires me to be away from home for 6-12 hours, 6 days a week. I don't have much time at all right now. He gets fed and I love on him, but lately he has become quite demanding and taken to hiding a lot when I am gone. Tonight, i was carrying in groceries and he tried to dart out the door. He has never done this before! He has poked his nose out, usually side by side with his older sister cat, but the few times that has happened I have caught them and they weren't too obligated to getting outside. This time, he seems almost determined. I love him so very dearly and fear losing him, I even had a dream a week ago that this very thing happened with a bad ending. He is like my child, I don't know if I can handle him running away. My brother lives with us, and he has two dogs. We are a happy "family", not sure why my cat wants to leave me?
Even though I'm gone a lot, I do give him time and attention when I am home. He gets about an hour at night and an hour in the morning, sometimes I come home for lunch and we are inseparable for two hours. On the weekends we play (I'm home more on the weekend). He is just used to me being unemployed for two months, I guess he is not adjusting very well - its my third month of work. Thanks for the answer though, ShadowKat, it shows that you are compassionate to animals and if I spent no time at all with him and did not care for him then I would definitely take your advice.
Yes, one of the dogs continuously pesters him and my other cat, she is supposed to be outside dog when we move so that should resolve some of his tension, then, I hope. I do love him, very much, I love both of my cats like they are my own children, thanks for saying that.
That makes me happy - I have a baby gate at my bedroom and they do tend to run there when she is out - if only my cats wouldn't follow me everywhere I go then that darned dog would not have opportunity to corner them. I am very stern with the dog and squirt her with water when she gets too aggressive. She is medium sized, skittish australian shepherd/doberman mix, but short and weighs around 40 lbs. When brother is home and I'm at work, though, he doesn't supervise the dogs at all, I am only source of discipline to them. So, maybe my brother has been home a lot lately which means that the she-dog is out more.
