That's a very complicated question. First you need to know how to tune and finger the instrument. Which in itself requires a lot of skill and practice. To play guitar you arrange your fingers on the fret board and squeeze to isolate a certain sound which is ascertained by either stroking or picking. Playing guitar isn't something I could teach you over yahoo answers. Your best bet is to learn how to read tabs and practice ALOT.Also consider lessons with someone you feel comfortable with. best of luck !

Buy a guitar book that teaches you chords and teaches you to read music, and also buy a book that teaches you tabs and all that stuff and make sure to practice at leat 2 hours a day to get goo 30 mins to just get decent. Also you might want to find a teacher cause they can help you alot. Thats about all I can tell you to teach your self.

it's really not easy to just explain on the internet.
you either have to have lessons
or a lot of patience and a really good ear for music.
i say, pick up a guitar you're comfortable with,
look up free guitar hints on the web
or just start strumming yourself.
once you get the hang of it,
start learning the chords
and finger tricks.
