Reliability is as good or better than other Toyotas. Probably due to the inherent reliability of electric motors, and the fact that they take wear-and-tear off of the engine.

As of last year, Toyota claimed that they had never had to replace a battery pack due to it wearing out. That was over 10 years of Priuses on the road (though the first 3 years were Japan-only, and therefore low-mileage). And people have reported going well over 150k miles with the batteries still performing just fine.

I've read one Honda Insight owner talking about his batteries having gone out at around 300,000 miles. He kept driving without them, still having good fuel efficiency. (From what I hear, though, the Prius cannot do that. Dead batteries = dead Prius. )

2. the small 12 volt battery to run the clock, radio, etc. and the high voltage battery under/behind the back seat. the reliability is excellent. 98% of the time we see them at the dealership is for normal maintenance. I really believe the prius is the best engineered car in the world.
