Toyota Prius?
I was wondering if anyone knows if the Toyota Prius is good even when you drive the Prius mostly on the highway.
I was wondering if anyone knows if the Toyota Prius is good even when you drive the Prius mostly on the highway. What kind of gas mileage does it get on the highway??

You can find out what other Prius owners report for their fuel economy by going to:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/mpg/MPG.do?action=brows...
and
http://www.greenhybrid.com/compare/mileage/toyota-... (NHW20)
http://www.greenhybrid.com/compare/mileage/toyota-... (NHW11)
If you know the fuel economy that you are getting on the highway in your current vehicle, you can find the percentage difference that you are getting compared to the EPA's highway test for your vehicle. Take that same percentage and apply it against the EPA's highway test for the Toyota Prius, and that is what you can expect in your driving. (Since all cars are rated using the same tests, you can use the EPA's figures to compare one car against another. However, since your idea of highway driving (and your driving style) is likely different than the EPA's (or even another person's), its not a direct comparison to say what fuel economy you'll likely get...)

I've had my Prius for almost a month and the best I've done so far is 48.9 MPG. I was hoping for more because I do a lot of hwy driving (62 miles roundtrip) but I have to cut some slack since I am still breaking it in and learning when to accelerate and when to take my foot off the gas when going down hill, not to mention blasting the A/C with this heat. So far I've been happy with it on the highway and having the clean pass for the Long Island Expressway has been a time saver for me. I was apprehensive about the size but it's deceiving and there is plenty of head, arm and leg space. it's also a pleasure filling it up. I went from a Honda Accord costing me $48.00 a week to $22.00 a week with the Prius. That's really nice to have the extra money in my pocket.

As with any car, the faster you drive the more the fuel economy plummets (rule of thumb about 10% decrease in MPG for each 5 MPH increase in speed beyond about 50).
It remains lower than other petrol-driven vehicles of a similar size and performance, because:
a) The co-efficient of drag is very low
b) The engine is smaller, sized for high efficiency at the energy output required to maintain highway speeds
The smaller engine is possible because of the electric motors allowing extra power for peak acceleration, but at a constant cruising speed, the electric motors play no active part in improving efficiency.
A modern efficient diesel, and/or somewhat smaller car may well outperform it by a small margin for uncongested highway-only driving. The big advantages of a hybrid are for town driving and stop-start traffic, but it is still very good on the highway.

Yes, mine averages around 45 mpg on the highway. Once I took a 150 mile trip almost entirely on the highway and it got over 50 mpg.
Of course the slower you go on the highway the better mileage you get (I keep it down around 65-70 mph). Toyota estimates that for every extra 1 mph on the freeway you lose 1 mpg. I don't think it's quite that much in reality, but you'll definitely maximize your mileage by keeping it down near the speed limit.

I own a 2004 and drive a combination of HWY and around town to work everyday ... I avg 54 MPG.
I've driven the car from NYC to Washington DC, and also avg'd about 55 MPG ... 65+ MPH using cruise control.
The car is great either way.

A prius is a really good mileage car, BUT the prius has no horsepower. the get up and go is bad, but i say if you are traveling long distances and if you are single, then I can recommend this type of car.

get a small diesel and help save the farmers by using biodiesel.
