Your experiences with low end notebooks?

I'm looks for a very inexpensive notebook, I have an old desktop PC that still handles most of what I do, just looking for an inexpensive notebook to run one application, plus a word processor, spreadsheet and have a wireless internet hook up. That's it. I will consider an Apple product, because honestly I've had it with my wonky Microsoft products & I don't like the buy VISTA or else stance MS is taking. No Toshiba's though... I have a ethics issue with them. Preference would be for about $500.00 or less if possible since I'm not doing much with it.
