Does an xbox have to be modded to use a pc dvd drive?

My thomson TGM600 went out and I want to replace it with one that is more reliable or cheaper to replace. is there something to the drive that allows it to play xbox games or is it just a regular dvd drive with a different power connector.

I know i could buy a replacement, but i have a dvd drive form my old pc and want to know if that would work if i split the hd power supply.

I have heard you need to flash the drive. I am not a computer expert so I don't know how to do it. I was looking into replacing a burned out DVD drive in a old 360 but a few people told me the drive would need to be flashed first. They gave me a long list of things to do and said if I did not follow it to the "T" that it would mess up the system.

i was wondering the same thing except i wanted to use a blu ray drive. look on ebay to see if they sell replacements for the xbox and if there are different models theyre selling then i would guess it would work without modding (just the dvd drive)
