18 gauge is too small for a septum piercing. the SMALLEST you want to go is a 16 gauge. You're fine to use the 14 gauge needle.
the area that you're going to be piercing is the fleshy part behind your front nose cartilage but in front of your septum cartilage. If you take your fingers and slide them into your nose, you'll find the right spot.
you're going to need a really steady hand to do this...it would probably be best for you to do it in front of a mirror.
Your eyes are going to water. you may experience pain. I didn't with mine but everyone is different.
aftercare tips: do sea salt soaks (1/4 teaspoon sea salt per 8 oz of water) twice a day for 8 weeks. easiest way to do this is to put your sea salt solution in a Dixie cup, shot glass or other similar small cup. put your nose in and blow out through your nose. you're going to want to do this for 5-10 minutes. you can also wash with an unscented antibacterial or antimicrobial soap, but if the soap make your nose feel like its burning (this was a problem I had with mine) skip the soap.
whatever you do, don't skip the sea salt soaks.
personally I'm not a fan of DIY piercings. but if you feel comfortable doing it...then more power to ya.
You are going to need to find the 'sweet spot'. To do this, pinch the septum of your nose. At the tip, you will feel a hard chunk- this is one pierce of cartilage. Near your fingertips you will feel a not-hard bit, then dipping back up into the hard bit. That soft spot has no cartilage, and is where you are aiming to pierce.
When you pierce, it is probably going to hurt, especially if you don't clamp. (Place a corkscrew on the other side of the nose to support it if you plan not to clamp). Your eyes will water. There are no major veins there, but you will bleed- nose piercings tend to do that, usually after the jewelry is inserted.
As for the jewelry itself, a 18g ring is not acceptable, because what is called the 'cheese cutter effect' can occur. Have you ever seen an old woman who wears heavy earrings, and it looks like her lobes have ripped, leaving a line of tearing? That is the cheese cutter effect. Smaller jewelry can slide through and tear the flesh with very little provocation; much less impact damage would start the process. I would even hesitate with 16g and recommend 14g, but it would be better than 18g.
As for aftercare, assuming you have sterilized jewelry, needle, etc, healing time is between 1 and 3 months. You should do sea salt soaks or clean it with saline solution and q-tips. The rule of the thumb is, when you get septum funk, you are probably mostly healed.
Yea using a 14g needle and a 18g ring will heal fine. You really cant figure out where your veins are but you can find your sweet spot(in between the cartilage and skin) which will hurt less and heal way faster. But I really suggest at least watching a youtube video or something if you've never seen one get done.
alright if you know all the risks then why would ask where the veins are in your nose?
anyways i would go to a piercer because its best if you have the same sized everything
if your needle is bigger than the jewelry, this could cause infection due to false input
my friend did her septum herself and she really messed up her nose and later on got surgery to fix it then got it pierced by a professional and now she looks a lot better but she learned her lesson!
