Because it is the ONE thing nobody can take away from them. It's one's own right, to remember some good times during an era during your life that doesn't exist anymore. Good memories serve you better than recalling anything negative of course.
Just remember to always live in the present and plan for the future, as the past is gone forever.

people cherish memories, whether good or bad

bad memories are life lessons, and one can learn from them if willing to do so

good memories make life happier, one worth living in; they also bring a spark with others whom have shared memories, as the bonds betwixt the two (or more) grow closer on each reminiscence

the last statement holds true for bad memories, the parties involved get closer emotionally without realizing it, as each time they recall it, they think of the other person.

That's a good question. I think it depends on an individual's psychology, upbringing and personality. Obviously, many people retain good, happy memories because they bring back good feelings. But people also tend to hold on to negative memories. I guess it depends on how a person views him/herself, and thus what memories he/she decides are significant.

Trial by peers is still the hands-down favorite why people hold on to
memories. In girls it begins bitterly at age twelve.
Women out-number the opposite sex so they constitute body of
citizens sufficient enough to become the main reason.
When they've got issues, people, leave 'em to it.

They might've had either negative or positive experiences associated with those memories. Either way, they have an impact on the person, and they're not easy to forget sometimes.
