While in Venice in September....?

I have a number of questions. I have been researching every online site I can find, so please don't just direct me to a URL. I need advice from someone who has "been there, done that."

From St. Mark's to the cruise port, it appears I can take a vaporetto to Piazzale Roma or Alilaguna to Tronchetto. What is the difference and which is better to get to a cruise ship, with luggage?

After leaving the cruise ship, I will need a decent hotel room for one night. If possible, I'd like to avoid the $200/night hotels, but still be in an easily accessible location (from the port) and a good area for sightseeing.

Pre-cruise, I'll be staying very close to St. Mark's Square. I need restaurant recommendations.

Finally, any other tips, suggestions, advice?

I've read Cruise Critic, Travel Advisor, Virtual Tourist, Venere, Expedia, etc. and will ask questions on some of those sites too. In all the researching I've done, I've read the same general advice. For hotels and restaurants I'm seeking specific recommendations from travelers based on their own experiences.

You say you don't want to be directed to a website, but have you researched your question at CruiseCritic.com? Click on "Boards" at the top of the page and then go to the "Ports of Call" board. If you can't find your answer by looking over the last few pages of postings on your port, then post your questions and someone will get back to you.

Regarding hotels/destinations/restaurants: Have you tried TripAdvisor.com? Lots of useful info there.
