My four year old cat (whom my wife and I have had for about 16 months) is making a mess around his litter box. He seems to wipe his butt on the floor and walls around the litter box box. In the past week, he has urinated in other places of the house.
The litter box is cleaned delay.
Any help would be appreciated. No wild guesses please.

The box has a cover, but I took the door off it. The liter (the scoopable kind) is completely changed every moth. It's scooped out daily.

Two ideas- -urinary issues (have the vet check him) -blocked anal glands. Dragging his butt on the floor is a sign. A groomer can release the glands. A vet can too, but it would be more expensive. My cat had to have hers released once and has been fine since. A cat's (or dog's) anal glands can become impacted. You can feel the glands (to the side of the anus). They should be quite small and soft. If they are firm and larger than a small green pea, they need to be done.
well you may need to change the litter. One that your cat prefers. Or watch your cat to make sure the cat goes to the liter box. Like a puppy you need to get rid of this problem. start at the root. Someone has to make sure to stop him when he has already started to go. move the litter box AWAY from a wall.
is it a closed litter box? if so buy an open litterbox (cats will stop using it if the smell is too bad)
Scratches in the litterbox itself can hold onto odors so perhapse replace the box itself.
Buy a larger box, my kitten did the same thing when she outgrew hers.
Not litterbox related, take the cat to the vet. Being a male he is more likely to get UTI's/crystals. When this happens they will stop using the litterbox, Urinate or deficate whenever they need to instead of waiting to get to the litterbox itself.
