I know that dioptric technology is used in lighthouses built in the 1800's which involve two sources of light - one fixed and one moving around the fixed.

Magnification implies the simple use of a lens in proximity to a source of light to intensify it upon a fixed point, or, the use of two lenses in varying proximities to one another to bring distant or small objects into view.
