Why was it so bad to live in that part of the country?
What made living in East Germany under the Soviet Regime so horrible. I understand that it was totally unnecessary to put up a wall and then enforce it with wires and mines, and tank traps that was totally uncool but what exactly did they do as in laws and such. They made life more of a hassle and you had no voice?

You couldn't visit or communicate with family in the west. If you believe the ameicanized version of history, the soviets tried to impose communism on east germany. I believe the us controlled the west. It was merely the us's inferiority complex and paranoia that led to this belief becoming a fact. The soviets did not put up the berlin wall. GDR built it. In reality, there were no such laws that the soviets created and enforced.
East Germany is still very different from the West today. My friends boyfriend is from there and has told how many racist people there are still today, and how much unemployment compared to the west, where it is high too at the moment.
People in the west still have prejudice (some of them) they even call the east "dark Germany" so there must be something bad about living there
