XBox 360 Elite - Help!!?

My son has an XBox 360 Elite, supposedly the one with the upgraded fan. He has treated that game system like it was his first born child...very particular about who even gets to touch it : ). Yesterday he tried to play a game that he had been previously playing for the last two days; the screen went red and black checkered on the television and there were red rings lit up around the power button on the XBox. I've heard all about the red rings of death on the XBox and would have thought this was the case except there are four rings to make a complete circle and only three of the rings are red and not always. Does anyone have any suggestions of what might be wrong and what, if anything, can be done with it?? Thanks in advance for any help.

Ok well if there are 4 rings, then that means your component cable/av cable isn't plugged in all of the way. Either that or if you got a component cable, make sure you don't have the components in HDTV mode if your TV isn't an HD cable. One of those two are likely the reason.

I think the amount of rings just is a 'code' for different problems, as long as you still have your receipt for the console, the store should replace it with a working one (they did for many of my friends).

Just make sure when you send away the xbox that you don't send your HDD with it (so your son doesn't lose all his saved game progress, gamer profiles, etc.)

Please refer to the following Microsoft knowledge base article for more details on the red rings -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907534

Usually red rings require a repair. Red rings are covered for 3 years under Microsfot's Xbox warranty.

Contact Microsoft through their Xbox web site or by calling 1-800-4MYXBOX

Something is wrong with the A/V(Video cables) cable. ?Make sure everything is plugged in completely. Also make sure the little switch where you can choose between HDTV and TV is completely on one or the other.
