Why did it take so long to find the shipwrecks of HMAS Sydney and the Kormoran?

I'm doing an assignment on the sinking of HMAS Sydney and i can't find any information about why it took so long to find the shipwrecks.

in this link (you probably read it) it says The major obstacle in locating the two ships was the scarcity of details about the location of the battle.
they had so little detail about the location of the battle.
