Is it better to drink one alcoholic drink a few days a week or not drink at all?

I hear so many things about how wine is good for you in moderate amounts, but I'm not entirely convinced. Usually I'm tempted to drink more, if not that night, then another night. Does anyone really ever drink ONE drink regularly? I have no problem NOT drinking, and I have no alcoholism in my family that I know of. It's like people that suggest having credit cards, but to pay off the balances every month. It sounds great in theory, but most of us are going to run up a bill at some point, despite our good intentions. What do you think?

I remember once hearing that wine isn't necessarily better than other alcohol somewhere, but my memory is foggy.

I've never once seen my father drunk - my mother, who's been married to him for like 28 years, has only seen him drunk twice since they've met.
When my father does drink, he'll only have a beer, two at a maximum and three if it's a special occasion (and he isn't at all a light-weight, either.)
However, he drinks about four beers a week - all on different days.

Drinking one glass of beer/wine/whatever a day for a week is supposedly much healthier for you then binge drinking or getting completely wasted/drunk once a week.

Whether drinking a glass of alcohol a day is healthy or not depends on your health and your family's health history.
If you have heart problems, or your family has a history of it, drinking one glass of alcohol can actually be good for your heart.

However, if your family has a history of breast cancer, drinking a glass of alcohol a day (or any amount whenever) can increase your chances of breast cancer.

So, it depends on what you're trying to avoid or help, and which one is your priority. You'd need to be dedicated to only have one a day at a max.

Binge drinking is bad for you, and worse than the occasional beer and def. worse than not drinking any at all. (Hangover, memory loss, dehydration, impaired judgment, increase of risks for certain cancers (mouth - example), liver and brain damage, etc.

If you have liver problems, it would def. be best to avoid alcohol altogether.
If you have a family history of dependency, you should also avoid it - as it increases your risks of becoming an alcoholic. Sounds weird, but if memory serves correct, alcoholics tend to have a certain gene that increase the chance of dependency, and this gene is hereditary.

The excuses some of us use to gratify our need to drink.
i am not any different having been in a family where drink was consumed, not excessively but i was at times. i got hooked on very strong lager, i used to like the taste, but as time went on the recipe somehow was changed, i believe the sugars used where changed to a glucose which started to give me problems like headaches and sleepless nights.
it was a single can of 9% at 600ml..and mostly followed by a double whisky and some times three.
but i am very glad about a year ago i gave it up my health has improved.
I still like a 5% beer on occasion but it no longer has a grip on me.
when i was working on a stressful job i would wonder although employed where i would find the money for the next bottle of whisky. that is when things started to kick in and i started to realise i had become an alcoholic of sorts and cut back on it.
My brother uses the excuse that it's a family failing as does my aunt, but i am not convinced but it is a weakness and self indulgence and kidding oneself does seem to be a family issue.
i really did not like whisky till a marriage break up. it was a sort of comfort but it did get out of hand as most things do that make you feel good.
And i stopped on my own i didn't need any help just stopped one day.

Any amount of alcohol consumption in women increases your risk of contracting breast cancer. However, it is good for your heart to have 1- 2 glasses of red wine per week. That is also rich in anti-oxidants!
