Need help with my 1989 Jeep Cherokee?

It has the 4.0L with an AW4 transmission and np-242 transfer case
one problem is the idle gets a little funky it will idle really low and almost die, did once, but more often after driving a while when I put it in park or neutral the idle jumps to around 1500rpm
also what is a good way to test the 4wd without getting stuck somewhere in the mud, when i throw it in 4high it doesn't have the feeling of it engaging in the steering wheel and the dash light could just be out so that's not what im looking for.

but the 4wd is vacuum operated and it doesn't seem safe to have it running and I only have two jack stands. it also has a new throttle position sensor which eliminated a high idle at start

The 242 is not vacuum operated. If the Jeep is a select track from the factory it will not have a disconnect axle in 89.

The idle issue is common in the 88 and 89. Often some injector cleaner will clear it right up. You may have to clean the idle air control valve in the throttle body.

Top test 4wd, find some grass or gravel. Stop, accelerate and see if you can spin a rear tire. Then engage 4wd. Back up and then pull forward until the light comes on. Try accelerating again. You should have either no wheel spin or the fronts will spin also depending on the surface.

For more info on the 242 see this article: http://ezinearticles.com/?Jeep-Select-Trac-NP-242-Transfer-Case-Information&id=281045

Typically a high idle on it's own is a vacuum leak, but with it also having a low idle problem on occasion it could be either a vacuum leak or perhaps a throttle position sensor issue.

To see if the 4wd is engaging you could put the XJ on 4 blocks/jack stands with the 4wd engaged. Turn your right rear wheel and see if the front turns. Typically it is the front left.
