My 1989 Jeep Cherokee limited reeks of gas.......?

I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Limited that I have put a few thousand dollars worth of work into so it should be good. Well today I drove from my house to work (a whole 2.5 blocks) and when I turned it off I smell a very strong order of gas. I have never noticed this before and I do not see anything leaking.

Update:

No leaks that I can see.

My 89 had the same problem. It turned out that 3 of the injectors were leaking. I'm not going to say that is what is wrong, but it might be a good place to start.

I agree with the last answer. MY 1990 did that. With the engine idling, hood up and parts of your body and clothes away from all those spinning things, look VERY closely at the injectors. There is a weep hole just under the electrical plug. If they are leaking, you should be able to see it there. Now, look at the fuel pressure regulator at the front of the fuel rail, is it leaking? There is a vacuum line going into the center of it, front of the engine, toward the center of the engine, Pull that vacuum line, it should NOT be wet! If wet, the pressure regulator is leaking and going directly into the engine, where engine off it will smell.

That is where I would start if you see nothing external.

    Good Luck

If you are smelling it, it is leaking. Keep looking or have a reputable mechanic look it over for you. If you are in the southeastern MI area, I'll be glad to take a look at it for you.

checked air filter lately...maybe running rich? are you over filling gas tank? walk beside jeep front to rear to find the strongest gas smell.....there may be a vent canister somewhere along frame that might be gas saturated......some have a filter you can change..look under gas tank to see if fuel stains are near filler neck or where the two halves are welded together. good luck...e-mail back for further help.

Its possible that its running rich during warm up street driving. You need to change the seals in the rear (window or door or what ever its called)
