Average Size of a 5 Month Old Male Kitten?

Hello all! My DMH Male kitten will be 5 months old next Friday and he is already a big boy! He weighs about 7.5 lbs and is already as big as my neighbor's full grown cat. According to my vet he is purr-fectly healthy and is not over weight but was very suprized when I told him he was only just turning 5 months old. My vet said he was big for his age and that he was probably going to be a big cat once he fully matures. He also asked if I knew if he had any specific breed, and other than your average run-of-the-mill domesticated house cat with medium length hair, I couldn't give an answer. His momma found my parents when she was pregnant and gave birth in their garage to just this one little guy. They kept his momma who is a pretty big cat herself (she honestly looks like a furry lynx! and probably weighs 14-15 pounds!) and I took her baby once he was ready to find a new home. In the 3 months I've had him he's really grown a lot and his paws are giagantic. I call him my baby panther (he is solid black).

So is he just abnormally large for his age? What is the average size of a 5 month old kitten? What are some large cat breeds so I can compare their growth cycle to see how big he could possibly get? I am not looking for his 'breed' since he does NOT have a specific one. He is simply my loveable, panther-like DMH kitten.

He is getting neutered on Monday. My vet won't neuter until 5 months old (and since he's turning 5 months next Friday the vet is fine with next Monday.) Also he is really long when he stretches out. He is far from chubby since I can just feel his ribs under a layer of fat, and according to my pet health guide, that is exactly how he should feel. He is a happy and healthy 'little' kitty.

I looked at Maine Coons, too. They look a LOT like his momma, but not so much like him. He isn't nearly as furry as a maine coon. Also, is it true larger cats can have heart trouble later on in life? (Not like fat cats, but just larger genetically) My baby has a heart murmur (grade 2-3) and was just wondering if that could have something to do with his size?

The average 5 month old kitten weighs approximately 5 to 6 pounds. It varies quite a bit depending on the kitten's genetics, nutritional status, overall growth rate (a kitten may be big yet further along in its development so have less growing left).

To find information on growth rates of larger cats try looking for information on Maine Coon kittens.

I Googled and found this site with a chart:

Average size cats are about a pound per month of age up to the first 9-10 months of age. So if he's not overweight, then he will probably end up a good 14-16 lb boy at 2 yrs old. Be sure he's neutered now if he's not done.

He sounds like his mom's a Maine Coon and his dad's a black cat of some sort. Maine Coon's are a fairly large breed. As long as you can still feel his ribs under a layer of fat, he doesn't become very round when he lies down (overweight cats' bellies will expand by a few inches to be round, almost circular, when they lie down due to all their fat), and he doesn't have an abdominal tuck, he should be healthy. The abdominal tuck is a sign of being underweight. If his paws are large, that's a good sign that it's normal for him to be large as well. Just be sure that you feed him good cat food. Right now you should be feeding him food specialized for kittens that has main ingredients of meat (not byproducts) and avoid food with corn in it. If you're worried about him getting big, just only feed him meals (rather than leaving the food out for him to snack on), and keep treats to 10% or less of his total diet. He sounds like a perfectly healthy cat to me.
