I have been designing homes for 14 years, and am a CPBD (certified professional building designer). I have had several customers ask if I am LEED certified. From what I have seen, it seems like the LEED certifications are for builders and architects working on large-scale projects. Is there a LEED certification that would be beneficial to someone who only designs homes?

Residential buildings are certified following the USGBC LEED for Homes rating system USGBC.org-LEED-Rating Systems-Homes). Building are USGBC-LEED certified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI.org) and Building Professionals are accredited after passing either of two level exams (LEED GA and AP with specialty). Visit GBCI's website and look under Professional Exams. Home builders and residential design professionals usually seek the highest level of accreditation through LEED for HOMES specialty exam. In addition during the home certification process the construction is policed (inspected) by an accredited LEED-H "green rater". This is a technician that conducts performance tests to ensure the thermal fitness of the envelope of the building. Is a challenging process but a rewarding one as well.
