What do you think about this thing I made about metal for tumblr?
I posted it on tumblr earlier but I will just copy and paste it on to here
So, I've been into Hardcore, Metalcore, and Deathcore for years but until fairly recently, I also used to listen to a lot of Metal. When I say Metal, I mean Death Metal, Power Metal, Doom Metal, etc. I listen to all of that way less now though. One of the reasons for that is I wasn't really feeling a lot of passion in the music. I mean, metal is a very demanding genre to play when you talk about skill and that's great and everything but just because the musicians are talented, doesn't automatically make it exciting to me. Different bands trying to play faster and more extreme than the next just shows a lack of emotion to me personally. That's why I've loved Hardcore for all these years. Not only is the music heavy which is something I love in music in general, but with that heaviness comes a sense of passion and raw emotion that I love.
Another reason I don't listen to it as much anymore is cause honestly, I've realized that a lot of Metalheads prove the stereotypes very true. Don't get me wrong, I've met some nice, open minded metalheads. I would even go as far as to say that the majority that I've personally met aren't like that though. The one's I've met are the kind that have that attitude of 'if I don't like a band then they must suck', or 'if you don't listen to metal than you're a pussy', which is just stupid to me. I mean, I know technically those things shouldn't make me stop listening to a genre of music because they don't have anything to do with the actual music but for me, it was enough.
BQ: When was the last time your taste in music had a big change? Was there any specific reasons for this?

KP- Even though I still love Metalcore and Deathcore. When I talk about that raw emotion in Hardcore, I'm not really talking about those genres. I'm talking more about straight up Hardcore. I mean, I know I've shown you Defeater before but this song is like the epitome of what I'm talking about when I say that I love the emotion that goes into Hardcore. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cynnKMpuY-Y And I've also been listening to a lot of Touche Amore, Title Fight, Have Heart, and La Dispute (to name a few) which are bands that also capture that same kind of emotion for me. Not to say that all Metal doesn't have passion though because as you said, it's definitely in the eye of the beholder. And sure, there are elitists in the Hardcore scene. I take crap sometimes for still liking the Asking Alexandria, Attack Attack, etc. type of bands but I would definitely say it's not as much. Like I went on a metal blog for a while a few months ago and people didn't care that I also liked the same mus

I would agree, for sure. I used to be the same way, but we both know that, I was a massive metalhead up until about... two? years ago. I don't like most metalheads either, but some are definitely cool. I ended up moving over to things with more emotion, more melodic, and softer. Not because I don't like metal, but because I value variety over monotony.
BA: Again, about two years ago. I stopped listening to metal exclusively and turned more towards folk and such. I think, however, that the biggest change happened over the summer, when I ****** up my hand with a nailgun, and ceased to be able to play anything really technical on guitar. Suddenly, a lot of the music I loved held less of a draw to me, because I knew I would never be able to play it. That shouldn't make me like it less, but I guess I just got kind of jealous of the amazing guitarists I listened to that I would never be able to live up to.
Hmm, for not feeling a lot of passion, I suppose that depends on the band. I mean, one of the reasons I really like Black Metal is because a great deal of bands have hatred that you can just feel through the vocals and whatnot. But, it does depend on the band as well. But, after listening to a genre for awhile, it may be that you don't hear the same passion that you heard in it before. For example, I first got into metal because I wasn't hearing the anger in my old music that I once heard and wanted to find something more aggressive.
As for the metalhead thing, it all depends on the person. I mean, think of all the people who are like "well metal is just screaming". Now if you just didn't listen to whatever they listen to because of that, you'd be missing out if that was your cup of tea.
BQ - A large change in my music taste? Probably when I went from listening to rock and rock based music to listening to metal. Other than that, I've mostly been slowly increasing my tastes within the metal genre. Most recently, I've been getting more into like Tech Death.
I agree with pretty much everything you said, man. I find I almost never listen to thrash or heavy metal, or death metal, unless it's unique and soulful. Cynic is a perfect example of that, you know? So now I mostly stick to post-metal and sludge metal, with the odd other band thrown around. Keep it real =)
Hardcore flat out kicks a**.
BQ: Probably about two or three months ago. It was actually when I made a lifestyle change (became a vegetarian), so maybe that has something to do with it. Also, I went and saw BTBAM, Job For A Cowboy, and The Ocean live, and felt like BTBAM and The Ocean destroyed JFAC. Hardcore (or hardcore influenced) music > straight up metal.

I do agree with you that a lot of the Cores have some passion, but I do feel that many of it is still pretty cookie cutter. But so is a lot of Metal, especially, IMO, Power and MeloDeath.
Still, apparently passion and emotion is in the eye of the beholder. I totally agree that a lot of Prog and Neo-Classical Metal is pretty devoid of emotion, as is a lot of Tech Death, which is why I never cared for it, but I dunno if I can go and agree with the rest.
Most Folk and Black Metal, for instance has never been about speed or skill, but raw emotion, and IMO, they capture it at least as well as most Core bands. You want pure passion, IMO, give Primordial a whirl. AA is about as impassioned a vocalist as I have ever heard.
As for "Elitists" it is true Metal has them, but are you honestly trying to convince me Core doesn't?!?!? LOL, I still know plenty of pinheads that deride Metal for those pointless gratuitous Solos, yet utterly nut themselves over equally gratuitous breakdowns. Seems, gratuity is in the eye of the beholder. And that as ever, people tend to be blind to elitism in music genres they are big fans of, as Metal, Core, Punk, Indie, Classic Rock, etc, ALL have their legions of douches.
As for people getting their genitals in a twist over what type of music people like.. the only thing more pathetic than the people ranting over what is "true" or not, or "good" or not, is the people who actually give a crap what other people think. The only people I ever feel are twats are the ones who change their tastes to fit in. If you like Metal.. then like it. IF you hate it, then hate it. I got no problem with people expressing their opinions whether they agree or disagree with me. Funny part is the way I seem to have developed my own following of butthurt people whining and crying over how much of a bully I am, when the thing is, except for a small number of trolls and or people who were ***** to me first, I may be honest and say I hate a band, but I usually am respectful about it. For instance the only person I act like a total douche about Radiohead toward is David, and well, Paperbag and I have some long running animosity. If people could actually take criticism as well and frelly as they dish it out, maybe we would not have these issues. Since there are dozens of other Radiohead fans on here that seem to take no umbrage to me not liking them (Indian Dotter, Punch, etc).
So I guess I will fall back to my usual outlook about musical tastes... who gives a flip? Seriously, do my questions somehow interfere with other people posting theirs? Do theirs interfere with me finding the ones I want to answer? Then who cares?
BQ- Well, in the last 3 years I have embraced Folk Metal, Black Metal and Prog, three things I never expected. But at my age, I doubt I will have too many "monumental" tastes shifts.. more gradual evolutions, overall. Also have really gotten into enjoying some Dubstep including a few artists you have recommended, and thanks to some cool folks from RHH, have added some real nice regional underground Hip Hop to my library.
But as for BIG changes, IDK, when I was a teenager?
