What is wrong with my cat?

I have a male cat who is almost a year old. Recently his tail has been limp and drooping and I have no idea why. He doesn't exhibit any outward signs of pain but whenever I touch him around the hindquarters he meows in pain. He's also been curling up in dark places like under chairs and beds and sleeping a lot. What is wrong with him?
Thanks for any help.

I'd get him to the vet's as soon as possible. It could be really bad but I hope he gets better soon. The only way you'll actually know for sure is if a vet does a physical examination, not YahooAnswers. Good luck! :D

Don't know, but he needs a vet visit, and soon. I wish you had said how long this has been going on. Cats are very good at disguising how bad they feel, so my motto is that if you notice anything like what you have noticed, the cat is definitely unwell. If he's an outdoor cat and could have been in a fight, he could have an abscess somewhere. They tend to get them on the front part of their bodies and on the back parts, not so much in the middle. If this were my cat, he'd be off to the vet tomorrow.

The curling up thing is normal for cats. he prolly roams while you are sleeping. The tail part you need to take him to the vet for. Make sure nothing is broken.

You really need to call the vet immediately. If there is a problem, early detection is key for recovery and for the cat's comfort. Please call your vet right now.

Good luck to you and your cat.
