How come some pretty people look ugly in pictures?

I know it means that they're not photogenic, but... why doesn't the camera capture their beauty? like, it's not like their face shape can change in a picture, right? it's just really weird :/

No, it is not "just really weird".

It is not the person, it is not the camera, it is the PHOTOGRAPHER. If a person is truly pretty in real life, then she, (or he), will absolutely be pretty in a photograph. If they are not, it is because the PERSON TAKING THE PHOTO does not know what they are doing. Pro photographers exist for a reason. They understand how to use light and posing and proper lenses and composition that will faithfully reproduce the beauty of a person.

I don't care how pretty a girl might be, if she is trying to take a photo of herself with her arm outstretched or in a mirror with a flash blaring off in her face, she is going to look bad. If a camera is used incorrectly, it WILL distort the face. Even if someone else is taking the photo, it still comes down to knowing proper photographic techniques and having the right equipment to create a photo that makes the person look at least as good, and many times better, than in real life.... and WITHOUT even having to touch any photo editing program in a computer. Great photos of pretty people were taken long before digital cameras and Photoshop existed.

Yeah, like the person above said, it's all about how the picture is taken. Lighting is one of the most important elements.
