when i download an mp3 i dont steal, because the person who put it online still has it. its called sharing

It most certainly is stealing. The creators of that music deserve to make money from it. If you download their songs illegally, they get NO money.

But as someone else has already said, there are many startup bands who choose to give away their songs for free, in order to gain publicity. You should be able to find plenty of legitimately free music to listen to.

It's legal right now if the artist doesn't claim copyright. There are thousands of free downloads available on the web put there by groups trying to get a fan base so they can begin charging.
