what is the ettiquitte of giving out gift bags at birthday parties?

My son's birthday party was yesterday. I am taking him and 12 of his friends to the Sky Zone. They will getting an hour of jump time and then be served pizza, cake and ice cream. Because the party was expensive, I am choosing not to give out gift bags.
What do you think about this choice?

No one ever got gift bags at any of my birthday parties when i was a kid.
I personally think gift bags are kind of ridiculous.
A gift is give to the birthday child, then there's the actual party, then they get a gift back? It's a contradiction in my eyes. Not to mention then there should be "thank you" cards as well. Jesus... Why not "you're welcome" cards while we're at it already.
