I WOULD THINK THAT 500 GALLONS FOR 5... 7" TURTLES WOULD BE BIG ENOUGH. I DO USE BARLEY AND CALCIUM BONES ALONG WITH 125 FISH PER WEEK...LEAFY GREENS AND GRAPES, SNAILS GARDEN WORMS...I AM LIVING CLOSE TO A FREEWAY..UNFORTYUNATELY...IN MY 47 YRS WITH FISH TANKS AND ALMOST THE SAME WITH TURTLES ..ITS SO WEIRD THIS IS STARTING TO HAPPEN..THANKS ALL !!!

Do you have any type of filtration on this pond. If you do there are some steps you can take but first lets deal with what is causing the acidic water. Out door ponds collect lots of leaves and biological material that is blown into it esp during the winter months. This will need to be removed first because as this stuff sits in the bottom of your pond and breaks down it acidifies the water I use a large med mesh net on a pole. this will need to be done several times then when that is done you will need a submersible pump that draws water through a filter box. You will need about 2 to 3 pounds of crushed coral or crushed shell in a mesh bag inside the filter box. this will help to maintain the a higher ph level in the water. The removal of leaves and such will need to be done on a regular basis as needed along with water changes..This should stabilize the waters ph value so that fish can be safely added.
She started having problems and bad, dying fish, scum in the bottom of the pond.
Her vet also had a huge pond on his place....
He told her to go fishing, catch about 15 FlatHead Catfish, and release them into her pond, she said how is that gonna help.
And he told her to get around 2 pounders if possible, they will grow, but as they grow, the more junk they eat....
Well, it did, they are bottom feeders, and they eat up all the vegetation, the bad stuff, and they will dwell on the bottom.
Now, the acid, can be several things, the gunk collected over and over, blowing into the pond, the turtles get out of the pond, they drag stuff back into the pond with them on their shells and legs...this will cause unwanted certain green leafy things to be put into the pond.
FlatHead Catfish loves to eat this stuff..they really do.
This way you do not have to change the water as often.....
Good Luck, it worked fine for granny and her vet.
I had never heard of this, I did know, my dad use to fish our giant natural pond and would catch Flatheads all the time out of it, and they would have leafy stuff in their mouths and tummies when cut open.,
He kept it stocked every year with catfish, and he ever ever had this problem.
Don't know if this will work for you, but could not hurt to try anyway.
Hope you get it fixed soon...hate to hear your fish are dying.
